Bob Moog, electronic music pioneer, dies at age 71

http://www.moogmusic.com/

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — August 21, 2005 — Bob died this afternoon at his home in Asheville, N.C. He was 71. Bob was diagnosed with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) in late April 2005. He had received both radiation treatment and chemotherapy to help combat the disease. He is survived by his wife, Ileana, his five children, Laura Moog Lanier, Matthew Moog, Michelle Moog-Koussa, Renee Moog, and Miranda Richmond; and the mother of his children, Shirleigh Moog.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moog :

Dr. Robert A. Moog (pronounced /moʊg/, not /muːg/) (May 23, 1934 – August 21, 2005) was a pioneer of electronic music, best known as the inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

A native of New York City, he earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Queens College, New York, a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in engineering physics from Cornell University.

He received a Grammy Trustees Award for lifetime achievement in 1970.

He died of a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor at the age of 71 in his hometown of Asheville, NC. The Bob Moog Foundation has been created as a memorial, with the aim of continuing his life's work of developing electronic music.

The man never realized what an impact he had on music. He was truly great and humble at the same time. He will be missed.

Responsible for an entire new wave in music.

In honor of the man, let us all pronounce his name properly for once. It rhymes with "vogue".

Are you kidding? I have NEVER, in my entire life, heard anyone pronounce it correctly (same with H.R. Giger).

'shamed to say I just assumed it was Moog, with long o sound, rhymes with "moo" with a g at the end. I've heard others pronounce it that way as well.

Likewise. My co-workers used to spout off the cow-ish "Mooooooog" just because they knew it annoyed me. (I work in a strange enough place that analog synthesizers are a regular topic of discussion.) I always wondered if that's why one of the models was named "Rogue" -- just because it rhymed.

I hope that his synths don't die with him. I'd love to see an updated Prodigy or something along those lines -- I'd love to have a Moog Voyager, but for someone with as casual an interest as I have, that's way, way too much money to shell out.
