A/V Reciever Powers on then powers off after 20 sec.

I went to turn on my Yamaha A/V receiver this morning and it powered on for about 20 seconds then powered down. I pluged it in by itself to see if it was a power strip that may have been overloaded and it did the same thing. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? This reciever is about 10 years old

Make sure the volume is not too high. Then check your speaker wires. Maybe a strand got loose and is touching another. That's the most common cause of shorting out, which would trip the protection circuit. Next most common is probably internal shorting, which would require some expertise. Which may be more/as expensive as a new receiver, unfortunately.

(you're not sitting on the remote, right?)

Not a speaker wire short. It goes into the shop next week. Going to be anywhere from $125 on up. As long as its under $250 I'll be happy. I paid close to $900 for this over 10 years ago.

You did not specify what model but I would think twice before repairing a ten year old receiver.

Even if it is a famed 890 or a 2095, there are better models out now for excellent prices.
