King Kong (1976) due on 11/22!

Well, you knew it was coming. First the '33 version, now the '76 version.

DVDAnswers is reporting that Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, Jessica Lange version of the movie will be out on Nov. 22nd.

Paramount Home Entertainment has kindly sent over some artwork for the 1976 John Guillermin directed King Kong which stars the likes of Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin and Jessica Lange. The disc will be available to own in shops from the 22nd November this year, and should set you back somewhere in the region of $19.99. I'm afraid we have no word on extra material for this one yet, but we'll bring you further details very shortly. For now though, here's our first look at the official region one package artwork:

What a terrible cover. I prefer the original poster art with the WTC myself. It's probably the same disc as the earlier release, just repackaged to cash in on the remake. Actually, they'll probably drop the trailer that was on the first disc - this is Paramount, you know.

I guarantee you the cover was changed because of 9/11. But it's not like they can edit that part out of the movie, right? So it seems kind of silly not to go with the original artwork.

That artwork is suck. I got this version off of DVDempire when they had their paramount blowout for only $7.99. Probably keep it and not pick this up unless they have a documentary focusing on how much this movie was hyped and how hard it fell after a week or so (no pun intended).

As soon as we know for certain there's no new goodies, I'll hunt down a used copy of the WTC version.

That is pretty ugly. I remember the transfer wasn't half bad on the old disc so it's doubtful I'll be upgrading. I bet they just throw in "a sneak peek at Peter Jacksons new King Kong film" although I believe the studios are different.

At least it's Rick Baker's Kong and not that ridiculous animatronic.

What a disappointment. There's a new UK version coming out with lots of extras, and the French DVD is a 2-disc set. Why are we being short-changed in region 1?

The old release already had 5.1 sound and anamorphic video, not to mention a much better cover, so what incentive is Paramount providing here?

If they really wanted to replace the classic Berkey poster as the cover art, they should have done a better job than this. It's not that hard! Just take a look at the much more elegant cover of the French 2-disc set.

The details haven't been announced yet, so it's a little early to call it a disappointment.

True, but Paramount doesn't have the best track record with its "Widescreen Collection" releases, which is what this is. Also, the movie is 134 minutes long - with 5.1 that doesn't leave a lot of room for extras on a one-disc release.

If they didn't want to use the WTC poster, why not go with the alternate poster that came out for this release:

$5 says Paramount does their best to CGI the WTC out of the climax...

My question is this - will this DVD include the longer version of the movie that used to play on network TV back in the early 80's?

If not I'm gonna hunt down the last release with the proper cover art.

The 1976 poster looked so cool like it was going to an exciting climax with Kong fighting jet planes in broad daylight with the N.Y. background.
But the movie doesn't deliver, this is one of those where the poster is better than the movie. The movie does have a wonderful John Barry soundtrack, I recommend people pick that up.

Well there has to be SOME new extra, for the old version can still be bought for 14.98 SRP still at most places, and this new one has a SRP of 19.98, and most re-issue of the same edition is a price reduction, not a raise in price, so there must be something new......

Oops, that was the title I was thinking about. I was thinking that the '33 Kong was coming out or at least announced. Didn't we have a thread about the '33 Kong here a while back?

They should use one of the frames a bit later when he pulls her top down.

it was announced in the HTF chat. and some specs were spouted off, that sounded more like a big preview for the 2005 version, but nothing has been confirmed. No date, but December seems plausible. check out

What's the holdup on 1933 King Kong?
