Over There Series Premiere 07-27-05

Episode: "Pilot"

Spoiler:
When a U.S. Army unit arrives in Iraq for their first tour of duty, they quickly find themselves engaged in a bloody firefight and discover the essence of who they are as soldiers. Some show more mettle in the face of death, while others become paralyzed from fear. Under the guidance of their sergeant, the soldiers begin to for, the bonds of brotherhood that are forged only through war.

DTV has had the pilot of this episode running on one of their advertisement channels since early Tuesday morning and I got a chance to catch it last night. Without spoiling anything, I'd say the first episode is nowhere near as strong as FX's three main dramas. It's still something I plan on watching every week to see where it goes, but it's not the typical FX drama we've come to expect. I'm not saying it wasn't any good, however.

I reviewed the DVD release of the pilot last week, and I agree with your assessment.

I've been waiting for this for about a year. I hope Bochco doesn't disappoint.

I got a DVD preview (first 10 minutes?) of it from EW and I liked what I saw, so I have Tivo set to record it.

Whoa, this just came out of nowhere. I hadn't even heard about this show. Why haven't they been running any ads for it?

TIME did a review of this in its new issue and said it was full of cliched characters.

On the other end of the review spectrum is USAToday's Four Star review.

I wasn't interested at first, but the more previews I saw and the fact that there's nearly nothing to watch during the summer, I decided that I'm gonna check it out.

I'll be tuning in. A review I read today said that this show takes 3 episodes to really get rolling. So I figure I'll take that as advice and unless I *really hate it* tonight, I'll probably give it the three to decide.

Kind of blah so far. Full of cliched characters to be sure. The guy with glasses is the intellectual? An angry black guy? A farm boy from Texas? And I highly doubt they go around bumping rap music in their Humvee's in real life. I don't remember seeing any sound systems in the Humvee's I've seen.

It was alright, last scene was the most exciting. Like mopower I don't really find any of these characters special, and I really can't stand Doublewide's voice.

I was busy taking apart a laptop while watching it, and sometimes I'd pause in my work to watch several minutes straight, so it was ok.
The scene where the guy yells "We didn't come for your oil, we came to kick your ass!" was pretty ridiculous though.

in farenheight 9/11 a solider says that he drives around iraq blasting rock music in his humvee, so its possible.

I tend to agree with most of the assessments here, although I can see how this show needs some time to really get its stride. Tonight's episode seemed to be more focused on setting tone and introducing characters (including the character of the war). Although some of the characters were rather cliched, hopefully they'll be less os once they're fleshed out a bit. I thought it showed definite promise.

One word review - sucked

Many word review - cliched characters, basically took AN and FMJ and Platoon and rolled into one, unoriginal, "yes we know you think we shouldn't be in Iraq" POS.

Next week we get see what Vic Mackey would be like as a sargeant in the marines. Fun!

And why isn't he using the forward grip, that's what it's there for. The magazine isn't a grip and putting pressure on it can cause misfeeds and jams

For what it's worth, I agree with your conclusion:
...As for the series, while this pilot exhibits some flaws, and my initial gut reaction is that it is a "good" show trying a bit too hard to be "great", it features a unique concept, vivid and effective visuals, and a strong cast. I can only guess at what its future holds, but based on this opening entry, I Recommend you tune in on July 27th and check it out for yourself.
I'll watch a few more episodes. It has promise, but doesn't look like a "great" show yet.

Then again, I watched the pilot episode for Seinfeld a month or so ago, thought it sucked (acting was much too forced, little chemistry between the actors), but obviously they worked out the bugs.
