Over There Series Premiere 07-27-05
Episode: "Pilot"
Spoiler:
DTV has had the pilot of this episode running on one of their advertisement channels since early Tuesday morning and I got a chance to catch it last night. Without spoiling anything, I'd say the first episode is nowhere near as strong as FX's three main dramas. It's still something I plan on watching every week to see where it goes, but it's not the typical FX drama we've come to expect. I'm not saying it wasn't any good, however.

TIME did a review of this in its new issue and said it was full of cliched characters.

On the other end of the review spectrum is USAToday's Four Star review.

I wasn't interested at first, but the more previews I saw and the fact that there's nearly nothing to watch during the summer, I decided that I'm gonna check it out.

I'll be tuning in. A review I read today said that this show takes 3 episodes to really get rolling. So I figure I'll take that as advice and unless I *really hate it* tonight, I'll probably give it the three to decide.

Kind of blah so far. Full of cliched characters to be sure. The guy with glasses is the intellectual? An angry black guy? A farm boy from Texas? And I highly doubt they go around bumping rap music in their Humvee's in real life. I don't remember seeing any sound systems in the Humvee's I've seen.

I was busy taking apart a laptop while watching it, and sometimes I'd pause in my work to watch several minutes straight, so it was ok.
The scene where the guy yells "We didn't come for your oil, we came to kick your ass!" was pretty ridiculous though.

I tend to agree with most of the assessments here, although I can see how this show needs some time to really get its stride. Tonight's episode seemed to be more focused on setting tone and introducing characters (including the character of the war). Although some of the characters were rather cliched, hopefully they'll be less os once they're fleshed out a bit. I thought it showed definite promise.

One word review - sucked
Many word review - cliched characters, basically took AN and FMJ and Platoon and rolled into one, unoriginal, "yes we know you think we shouldn't be in Iraq" POS.
Next week we get see what Vic Mackey would be like as a sargeant in the marines. Fun!

And why isn't he using the forward grip, that's what it's there for. The magazine isn't a grip and putting pressure on it can cause misfeeds and jams

Then again, I watched the pilot episode for Seinfeld a month or so ago, thought it sucked (acting was much too forced, little chemistry between the actors), but obviously they worked out the bugs.
