I believe it was creative differences, which is why Keital was dismissed and replaced by Pollock.
Jennifer Jason Leigh though, was replaced due to scheduling conflicts because of the change in casting with Keitel.

Kubrick fired him? He didn't quit? Wonder if Keitel was acting crabby about the pace of the film. Then Cruise had to refilm all of his scenes? Ouch. Sounds like a huge creative blow. Like making the film twice.
Would be great to see all those scenes. Which I know will never happen.
Make that two classic flms Keitel got the boot.

Nasty rumors made it across the Atlantic. As ridiculous as this sounds now that we’ve seen the movie, a story did the rounds that Harvey Keitel was replaced because he literally came on Nicole Kidman during a simulated sex scene. At least that one was ridiculous enough to never be mentioned again. I only bring it up to embarrass those film journalists who were stupid enough to print it. It goes a long way towards explaining the cold and confused reception to Eyes Wide Shut, which for my money was dismissed by most critics in the US for not being pornographic enough; which was entirely missing the point.

You know, I've read that rumor before.
But it's got to be false. Not only because it's ridiculous, but unless Kubrick completely rewrote the script after Keitel was dismissed, the Ziegler character and Kidman barely even really talk with each other, let alone have a sex scene with one another.

You know... It would be worth it to get fired for coming on Nicole Kidman.
And not even for the actual experience of coming on Nicole Kidman. It'd be worth it just so you can say 'I came on Nicole Kidman' and knowing that it's true.

I believe this is why Billy Bob Thorton doesn't seem upset about breaking up with Angelina Jolie. You'd think that ending a relationship with one of the hottest women on the planet would be a little traumatic. But He's all smiles. You know why. Because at any time during a conversation he can say 'Yeah, thats nice, but its not as good as the time I came on Angelina Jolie'.

On the 'coming on' scale, Katie Holmes isnt even close to Nicole Kidman. I doubt Keitel would've been sent to his trailer, much less get fired , for soiling Ms. Holmes.
