Paul McCartney: Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard - 9/13/05

McCartney conjures 'Chaos' on new solo album

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Paul McCartney returns to the one-man-band approach that marked his 1970 self-titled solo debut on "Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard," his 20th solo album since the dissolution of the Beatles.

Due Sept. 13 via Capitol, the 13-track set was co-produced by McCartney with Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck) and is the artist's first new studio album since 2001's "Driving Rain."

"I did not want to rush this album," says McCartney, who played everything from guitar, bass and drums to flugelhorn and harmonium on the project. "I think it was worth the wait though. The music became more interesting over time and I'm really proud of what we did."

The album runs the gamut from piano-led tracks like "Promise To You Girl" and "Fine Line," to a self-described "daughter of (the Beatles') 'Blackbird"' dubbed "Jenny Wren" to the contemplative "Riding to Vanity Fair" and "At the Mercy."

"Chaos and Creation" will be supported with a previously announced fall North American tour, which begins Sept. 16 in Miami.

Very Good News. I'm always happy to snatch up any new musical output from Paul.

I have tics to see him in Oct. and had the same reaction when I heard about this album coming out. Except I wasn't joking. Flaming Pie was good, but I've not liked what he's done since.

He should run into the studio and bash out a bunch of crazy "Helter Skelter"-like songs with that band of his from Live 8. Give the drummer some steak and put on an Animal wig on his head.

I honestly wish that Flaming Pie had been his swan song, but if he has another great album in him I'm all for it, and will be buying regardless.

AOL Music is offering a preview listen to the opening track of Paul's new album. The song is Fine Line. It's compressed and has a little talk over but it's fun to get a new Macca music fix.

Is there a McCartney tour thread?

Saw him last night in Phoenix. Man...that band is good! Maybe his best solo backup band yet. Drummer was a monster. Actually made the CandCITB songs a bit better hearing them live. (didn't like the disc when i bought it, but played it again while stuck in post concert traffic.)

Nice ta hear some old songs as well. I'll Get You, Til There was You, and many others I wouldn't have expected him to pull out.

Just two more cities I think. And I'd bet they are long sold out, but I'd recommend the show.

Going to the show Saturday night. Glad to hear it's a good show. Is the drummer the same one he used on the last tour (big guy with huge hoop earrings)? He was pretty good.

Hopefully this tour, the concert film will be considerably better than that blow-job of a display that was Back In The US.

Yeah, the drummer is still Abe. In fact the entire band is the same great line up.

My favorite part of the show this time around was...

Spoiler:
Too Many People leading straight into She Came in Through the Bathroom Window. I never thought I'd see that live and it was fantastic.
