A bit of useless trivia. Star Wars has just gone over 4 billion dollars in all-time box office receipts.
The 'James Bond' franchise currently sits at #2 with total worldwide earnings for the 20 films standing at $3.6 billion. 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy is third with $2.9 billion, 'Harry Potter' sits at fourth with $2.6 billion, and the 'Jurassic Park' franchise rounds out the top five with its worldwide mark of $1.9 billion.
Counting the $9 billion the SW brand name has earned worldwide in total merchandise sales, George Lucas' six-film saga has tallied more than $13 billion since 1977.

Bad Saturday drop for Land of The Dead. Doesn't bode well for it's legs. Bewitched also had a Saturday drop.

I wonder if this was (adjusted for inflation) one of the lowest June weekends for box office $$$ in a number of years?
Kind of surprising because it was really HOT in the Northeast this weekend...not the kind of hot you want to go have a BBQ in, but the kind of hot you want to stay inside over...

Please remember folks...
Land of the Dead is playing on almost 1,000 less screens than Bewitched, Herbie and Mr.& Mrs. Smith.
Also, the above mentioned films are all PG and PG-13 which equals FAMILY FILMS. You can't take children to see Land of the Dead.
I've hated Universal's choice to move Land of the Dead to June instead of October since it was announced. Big mistake. It would have cleaned up at the box-office if it was released around Halloween.
And yes, I can't wait for the Unrated DVD.
I would have rather waited until February of 2006 to see the DVD and had the film make $40 million with a proper release.
Oh well, Universal played their cards and left poor George A. Romero holding the bag.

^^^I think it was more to do with front load. Everyone who wanted to see it badly enough saw it on friday. everyone else just shambled to the theatre.
that sort of comment wasn't funny when WM Lopez did it and only causes flame wars and thread derailing.
I don't see why its take in is anything bad? Like you said Zombie, it was on much fewer screen count than anything else that opened big this weekend. As for universal playing their cards. The bump up was a good marketing standpoint. Who's to say it would have been any better in october? the audiance for land of the dead isn't that which will be seeing bewitched and would consist of folks who saw batman the week of release already.
Universal had confidence in its product and they bumped it up. They did a lot of promoting for it. I mean, how many ads for this did you see in the span of a 30 minute program? I would say atleast 4. Add in radio spots and banner ads and so forth. They did everything they could have possibly done. Universal played every card they had minus one. If they feel the film is a failure, then the only fault is on the prints made and how many theatres had it playing. Romero's only bag holding is on the product.
This will be a huge seller on dvd. So it's no worry there. Universal sees that box office takes are down in general because of the big DVD market. So it makes perfect sense to release a dvd of this around october so they could cash in at the prime time for video rentals and purchases for a scary movie.
Waiting for a dvd release till feb. with an october release would have been decent sells numbers, but not nearly as much as a october dvd release window has in potential. Very smart move on their part.

I wouldn't feel bad for poor George Romero. Universal gave his movie a Summer release, they pitted it against two movies (Bewitched & Herbie) that have performed unspectacularly this weekend, and then advertised the heck out of it. How much more "proper" of a release can you get?

The "Land of the Dead would have done better in October" debate isn't a very strong one...sure, it may have finished 1st or 2nd instead of 5th in October, but chances are it would have made about the same box office $$$. Plus "The Fog" is scheduled for October release, and I think there's a pretty good argument that it's better to release LOTD now as the only horror picture on the market than wait until October and compete with a more "mainstream" horror picture.

I'm sorry for my comments towards WM LOPEZ's comments about the Land of the Dead Unrated DVD release.
I was only playing around with him. I wouldn't want to start a flame war. Again, I'm sorry.
Jackskeleton, JoeMolotov and Shannon Nutt - you all made some great points regarding LOTD's release.
I guess I just get all worked up because I just want Romero to suceed and have a hit. He's my favorite director (need I say it...my idol) and I just want to see him working on films on a regular basis again. I don't want to wait another long period of years for him to be able to direct again.
I guess it all boils down to the final product he produces. I didn't hate Bruiser, but I didn't love it either.

Don't forget SAW 2 coming out in October as well.
