"From the Earth to the Moon" - Anamorphic WS/DTS: 9/20/2005

This is a fabulous series, one I rank only below Band of Brothers. Can't wait.

Since the episodes had to be remastered in high-definition anamorphic widescreen for HD-DVD, why not reissue them in regular DVD anamorphic widescreen too?

I got the original set a LONG LONG time ago, and actually never managed to watch it all even though I really enjoyed the parts I watched.. I'm pretty ticked it's being re-released widescreen but not positive I'll buy it again, but I might..

I caught about 1/2 an episode when it originally aired, and I remember thinking it was excellent. I just might go for this one if I can find a good deal on it.

But now that I have the 61" widescreen, I don't see that I have much choice but to dip again.

I believe you are absolutely correct - the series was conceived, filmed and broadcast with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio.
Any one who doesn't already have this should place it high on their wish list - for me, it is still the best TV mini-series ever, but I'm not sure I need to double-dip on this.

If it's cropped, I'll pass. The current set looks and sounds great anyway. PLus what other extras can they put on there? We'll see, but I very highly doubt I'll be upgrading.

My thoughts exactly. It will be fun to see how many of the "OAR purists" think this is a good thing.

I don't recall anything about From the Earth to the Moon ever being widescreen. I remember reading lots of articles in '97 or thereabout about the miniseries, I was very excited and couldn't wait to see it. I even remember hbo.com had a cool-lloking site about it. But I don't remember anything about it supposed to being widescreen. As I understand it was shot and broadcast in 1.33:1, and that's the OAR. We'll have to wait for comparison screenshots to confirm one way or the other.

Hmm, I was curious about that...I guess I'll likely pass (though I'll wait for more confirmation/refutation regarding the original aspect ratio first) because I'm no more interested in letterboxing of 1.33:1 material than I am in pan-and-scanning of legitimate widescreen footage...

All the shots I worked on, I was told to keep in mind that it was going to be cropped to widescreen and that the show had been shot open matte to also be cropped to widescreen.

Great, I just bought this. At least it was used for a reasonable price ($44.99).

If I double-dip on this, it certainly won't be until the HD version is released and I hav a HD TV.
I'd be tempted at that point; this is a brilliant miniseries, one I've watched several times all the way through.
