Def Poetry 6/10
Greatest poem ever, from Dave Chappelle: "Fuck Ashton Kutcher."
Pretty good episode overall. Avery Brooks appearance was fun, and a nice tribute. The kid from Sacramento early in the episode was great with the random search poem. Overall pretty solid, and without a lot of the poetry "stars" (Black Ice, but no Sia, Jones, etc.).

I agree, Dave Chappelle's two poems were funny. I liked "How I Got The Lead On Jeopardy" better. Noticing that Ashton always using the police when punking black people was pretty observant and totally halirious.
I disagree about the young (19 years?) kid from California. I thought it was the worst poem of the night. My problem with it came from the fact that I think the kid wanted to decieve the audience. He was dressed very nicely, had a young kids face, appeared to have his life in total control...and then just went off on the police in a very violent and agressive way. I have never experienced racial profiling, so I could not relate to a poem about it. All I can do is listen to his words and judge what he is trying to say. But while listening to him rant, I thought about what Cosby has been saying over the past year about African American men getting their lives together. Obviously Cosby's word have made no change in attitude, because when that young poet screamed "fuck the police" or other similar things, the crowd went wild like no other time in the night. Just seems a tad bit agressive and almost staged. Almost like that boy had a few poems to choose from, but chose that one because he knew that he would get a positive reaction.
Lauryn Hill was too cryptic and wordy. Avery Brooks, and his tribute to Ossie Davis was very nice. I especially enjoyed the tattooed woman discussing his child and the other young 18 year old talking about how uncomfortable he feels touching other people and cordinating greetings. I guess I am just about originality on Def Poetry. After a few seasons, people bitching about their problems with police just feel repetative and overdone.
Glad it's back on the air! W
