Zatoichi TV Series coming to R1

As per www.thedigitalbits.com, the TV series rights was acquired by Media Blasters and they are planning to release the first season in 2006.

We've got some great news today for you Zatoichi fans out there (and judging by the amount of e-mails we get, I know there are a lot of you). We've officially confirmed with Media Blasters that the company has obtained the Region 1 DVD rights to the Japanese Zatoichi Monogatari TV series! The series ran for four seasons (in 1974, '76, '78 and '79 respectively), with approximately 100 hour-long episodes produced in all. Media Blasters is currently planning to release the entire first season (26 episodes) on DVD in 2006. If sales of that first season are good, the company will continue releasing the remaining seasons until the complete series is available on DVD. Media Blasters has promised to keep us updated as their plans develop, so keep checking back here at The Bits for the latest.

Curious...approximately 2 episodes per disc?

What's the box set I keep seeing in Best Buy? Just off the top of my head (hard to trust my memory) I seem to recall it being the first couple of films; does that seem right?

How is the tv show in comparison to the films?

You want stranger....take a look at this:

http://www.amazon.com/Zatoichi-Blind...1789232&sr=1-6
http://www.amazon.com/Zatoichi-Blind..._bxgy_d_text_b
http://www.amazon.com/Zatoichi-Blind..._bxgy_d_text_b

Looks like it is the exact same cover as volume 1, but with the first 3 volumes. It looks like they are putting together set 1-3 in one package with a price cut.

If you add it all together:

V1 - $17.99
V2 - $26.99
V3 - $26.99
Total - $71.97

New collection - $35.99

Total price difference - $35.98

So there you have it folks, v1-3 in a newer package for half the price...not a bad deal at all.

I've only got the first set of the TV show, but judging from that, IMO it's certainly on par with the movies in regards to depth of characterization, story, cinematography, acting and action. And from the reviews I've read from knowledgeable fans, the TV series is generally regarded as maintaining the high standards of the movies.
