Should I hook my VCR up to Surround System
I just got my first surround sound system and was wondering if I should hook up my VCR to it along with the dvd player. Would I get better sound from my VHS tapes? My friend said VHS doesn't have surround sound so I wouldn't get better sound anyway. Is my friend right?

Nothing wrong with hooking up your VHS, I'm sure your surround receiver has some processing that it can do that will allow a "virual" surround sound. Better then just two channel (for movies anyway), but not as good as DVD (obviously).
If you still watch VHS, have a lot of tapes or whatever, go for it. Your certainly not going to hurt anything. Just don't expect DVD quality (audio or video).

The speakers hooked up to your receiver are almost certainly better than your TV speakers even if you're only getting stereo or even mono sound. If your receiver can do Dolby ProLogic, or better yet ProLogic II, you can also get a pretty satisfying surround sound experience. I would say that in general everything that puts out sound should be sent through your receiver if possible, it's just going to sound better.

In addition to the improved sound quality -- reason enough! -- there is a lot of Dolby Surround-encoded material both on analog broadcast/cable channels and on pre-recorded tapes. If you set your receiver so that the VCR audio input defaults to Dolby Pro Logic (II if you have it), you'll often get decent surround information from such sources.

Many of your VHS tapes will decode and playback via Dolby ProLogic on your system. And (as mentioned) pretty much everything will sound better than going through TV speakers.

Do it, some VHS titles sound really good. One I remember that was quite exceptional was Men In Black. This was back when my surround system was only ProLogic. It sounded great. If you're still watching movies on VHS, I would definitely hook it up to your sound system.
