Curses! Mr. + Mrs. Smith = PG-13
From mpaa.org:
Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.
Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, intense action, sexual content and brief strong language
This one looked like one badass violent, sexy shoot-'em-up (in the vein of True Lies). I love Doug Liman, he did a good job with the Bourne Identity (PG13 as well), but that was much more restrained action. I was hoping they'd go with an R. Oh well, at least I'll have some 12-year-olds to hang out with in the theater...

Is this really a surprise to anyone? R-rated action movies are an endangered species. Hell, Alien vs. Predator was PG-13 for God's sake. Even R-rated horror movies are becoming a rarity.

I was hoping! I guess it was kinda like AvP...the way the trailers look, you say to yourself, "there's no way that's PG-13". The scenes with her in the corset/garters and them kissing, etc...
I miss the days of summer movies like The Rock, Con Air, Face-Off, True Lies, etc. (strangely, most starring Nic Cage)

Angelina Jolie's nudity is a never-ending source of amusement to me.
It's not an obsession with the rating itself, but the movies they're shovelling into the ratings. Unless you're happy with watching the Edited for Television version of whatever was originally going to be released, before some exec realized that PG13 makes more money...I don't mind PG or PG13 when it's appropriate (most superhero movies, Star Wars, etc). It's when movies that children should clearly not be watching are edited down so children can watch them.

While the concept of this film could make an awesome R rated action film, given the talent involved, I too would probably agree with the assessment that this film was intended as a pg-13 flick from the beginning. Who knows though.

It does look like True Lies Redux...of course, True Lies is rated R (and one of my favorite action movies...where's the SE?!).
I'll still be there opening day, I was just hoping for something a little harder... I know it's trendy to hate PG13 movies around here, but I usually don't mind them, as long as it's done because it's appropriate, and not to make more money (off the ticket sales now, and the sudden double-dip on the unrated later).

Also, side note - Now that we all know that everything is released as an "unrated" DVD anyway, why don't they go ahead and shoot for the R/NC17? If they're going to release it as "too hot for theaters", why not make it so? It's not like you're going to offend the guy who buys the unrated DVD.

Seriously though, I thought this movie looked like yet another lame PG-13 action movie from the moment I saw the first trailer (not that I think PG-13 movies are lame, just that I was positive it would be PG-13). I highly doubt there will be an unrated directors cut.

From what I read, they did shoot this in the conclusion that it was going to be rated R. There was some very hot Jolie/Pitt sex scenes that will likely get cut. This is probably why the movie was delayed and shit, I've been seeing trailers for this flick for like 2 years it seems!

Yeah this movie finished shooting last fall and was always intended as a summer 2005 release. No delays, and there certainly wasn't a trailer around more then 6 months or so ago.
As for it being R rated...while I like seeing Angelina naked, I hardly will skip this film over that. Liman has impressed me before, so he's got my money.
