This thread is deceiving. I wanted the whole weekend's box office even though it's only Saturday. Seriously though....
Kingdom of Heaven will only make around $20 million over the weekend? Damn that sucks. It will be lucky to make more than $75 million with Episode 3 coming out in less than 2 weeks.

Its officially movie summer season and still the BO can't break out of the doldrums. I know the clouds will clear in two weeks, but with this kind of malaise, how much (if at all) will SWIII and the rest of the summer blockbuster be affected?

To the Box Offices credit, nothing really hyped has come out this year.
I mean, Hitch was a surprise, but aside from Sin City, I can't say I was "hyped" to see anything this year.
And yes, I can predict what's going to be big by how hyped I am, dammit. Just like that time I said Titanic would sink at the box office, or The Fast and The Furious would bomb.

no matter how many times it is posted about not having the entire weekend numbers when this thread is posted, it makes me laugh.

We aren't going to start this talk again, are we? With the threads, it's an over progressive thing. When friday's numbers come out we post them and then the OP updates it when the other numbers are up. This way we don't have a thread for friday a thread for saturday and a thread for sunday.

The summer really has taken its time to get a good kick start. Those numbers are very weak.
then again, I think the general idea is that folks are tired of period epics and see them as all the same. troy/gladiator/kingdom in heaven.
As for House of Was. Guess the selling point of seeing Paris get killed wasn't enough.

I am also surprised at Kingdom's low numbers. I guess everyone is either waiting for the DVD (like me) or just tired of period epics.
Kingdom of Heaven had a $130 million production budget not including marketing, so this has to be considered a huge disappointment. However, it did make $56 million overseas according to: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/...omofheaven.htm

With dvds costing $16 in less than 6 months after the movie opens it's no wonder it's better to wait for the dvd. So why go pay $7 to see a movie unless it's a must see movie that you can't wait for 6 months.

But Fox was enthusiastic, noting that "Kingdom" has a lengthy running time of nearly two and a half hours, while its "R" rating restricts access to youngsters. The studio said two-thirds of the audience was over 25, not exactly the demographic targeted by Hollywood at this time of the year.
"Twenty (million) is very, very good," said Bruce Snyder, Fox's president of domestic theatrical distribution. "I'm delighted."
OK, Bruce...Spin me a tune buddy.

$20 million isn't spectacular but when you don't shell out the money for a REAL leading man you've gotta expect that kind of take.
I simply don't understand why Hollywood makes the bone-headed moves it does.

1. There hasn't been a good movie worth going to see in an actual theater recently.
2. The rapid drop in home theater system prices have driven many consumers to wait for DVD release. Why bother with overpriced tickets, overpriced concessions, way too many commercials/trailers before the actual movie, rude audiences, unclean theaters, and poor picture and sound quality?
3. DVD releases are often the so-called Director's Cuts that turn a bad movie into a decent one (no need to please MPAA reviewers!).
4. The red state disdain of the entertainment industry is depressing box office receipts, a fallout of the 2004 Presidential elections where many prominent entertainment celebrities were too blatant in their support for Senator Kerry's failed campaign.
#4 was not mentioned in the EW article but it's obvious that had a major effect in the last 18 months or so.

Well, Orlando Bloom on paper seems like he can carry a film. But when you put that theory into practice you will see that he can't carry shit. Especially if what you are asking him to carry wont allow those 12-16 year olds that worship him to even get in the door without mom and dad.
He's becoming a Jude Law. Looks like they can carry it themselves and act decently.. but the box office numbers sing a different song.
