Explain: Klaatu barada nikto

What does it mean in War of the Worlds.

When and how is it used in Army of Darkness?

Thanks

it was used in Army of Darkness by Ash, poorly I might add, to try to open a portal back to his dimension. Since he said it wrong the Army of Darkness was reborn.

it was from The Day the Earth Stood Still. the phrase was used to
Spoiler:
stop Gort, the robot in the film, from attacking.

in Army of Darkness, Ash must say these words in order to retrieve the Necronomicon without waking the Deadites. unfortunately, the last word slips his mind.

beyond that, the words are seen in Tron, posted on a sign hanging in the hero's cubicle. in Return of the Jedi, three of Jabba's skiff guards are named Klaatu, Barada, and Nikto. in an episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, three aliens encountered by Donatello and Rocksteady are named Klaatu, Barada and Nikto. finally, in Toys, Leland Zevo speaks the phrase to stop a rampaging sea creature.

In The Day the Earth Stood Still, Klaatu is the alien who comes earth, warning men to either abandon violence or be destroyed. He has an giant robot companion, Gort, who protects his space ship while he mingles with the humans.

I'll spoilerize the rest

Spoiler:
If Klaatu doesn't return to the ship Gort is programmed to destroy earth. Klaatu gives the above phrase to a woman he befriends and instructs her to repeat it to the robot to prevent the earth from being destroyed. The woman's boyfriend rats out Klaatu who later is shot by the authorities. The woman repeats the phrase to Gort who then retrieves Klaatu's body and resurrects him. Klaatu repeats his warning Earth that if they threaten violence against any other planet the Earth will be destroyed. Then they leave.

it doesn't actually mean anything - it's just one of those things that gets recycled or referenced in movies - either because they can't think of anything else to say or as an homage to sci-fi.
