Well, I have laughed at the posts of others when reading about folks that simply didn’t take the time to read the packaging and make sure they had the right version. But tonight, I was at Best Buy, saw the Bourne Identity (which I have been meaning to pick up for some time), and grabbed it. It wasn’t until I got home and removed the shrink-wrap before I realized that I picked up a fullscreen copy.

I simply had a brain fart and never even checked to see which version I had in the store. Nobody’s fault but mine. Live and learn…

So, I realize that mileage may vary from one Best Buy to another, but generally speaking, will they let me exchange it for a widescreen copy? What is everyone’s experience?

Since it's the same movie, they should probably let you exchange it. If they say you can only exchange it if it's defective, tell them your disc is missing half the movie. I work at Best Buy and they generally let people exchange full screen for widescreen (or vice versa), even if it's open.

But yeah, YMMV.

It's never happened to me, but it could have happened once. When MGM released their SE of The Silence of the Lambs, I saw some copies on the shelf the day it came out. I was about to buy one, but then I discovered I hadn't brought enough money with me. Anyway, later, I realized that the copies I saw had the silver banner that just said "Special Edition" on them. Those were the fullscreen versions. The widescreen version (with the red banner) was labeled as a widescreen special edition, but the fullscreen was just labeled as a special edition.

I picked up Body Double from the Wal-Mart 5.50 bin about a year ago. It wasn't until several months later after I had opened it and lost the receipt that I realized that it was the full screen version.

I do the same thing all the time. No, not buy foolscreen when I want WS...but I laugh too. ...see?

A dvd collectors nightmare.

I have only returned defective discs to BB...always without a problem. So you should have no problem. It's not like you want $ back....just the proper edition/copy.

Still waiting for that moment when I slip and buy foolscreen. Ahh...what am I talkin' about. It'll never happen.

I accidentally bought a FS copy of "The Rookie" because it wasn't marked on the front and I didn't realize there was a FS version. I took it back the next day, and had no problems exchanging it.

I did it once, with The Hulk. Didn't even check when I purchased it. I did notice it before I opened it though, so exchanging it wasn't an issue.

1) Take off ALL clothes. Get a garbage bag and put them in it. Your clothes can no longer be worn.

it happened to me with the Predator SE. I got in the car and realized it was fullscreen. The store had no widescreen, so i went to a different Best Buy and exchanged it without a problem.

I also bought a used fullscreen copy of One Hour Photo, and for whatever i never returned it. It now serves as a constant reminder.

Actually I had a problem with exchanging fullscreen for widescreen at the Best Buy in
Woodbridge, NJ two weeks ago. They claim that if the shrink wrap has been opened then they can only replace it with SAME EXACT copy ... which means only for another fullscreen copy. I had bought Wimbledon fullscreen by accident and had opened the shrinkwrap but not cracked the Security Device thingy. At first they wouldn't take it at all because the Security Device thingy was missing from the bottom and side of the box. But I proved to them that all their copies of Wimbledon only had thingies at the top of the box. They eventually agreed but it was a close call!!

I did this a couple years back with the 2nd Harry Potter movie at CC. I opened it while we were eating pizza at a place across the lot, noticed my mistake and went back to CC immediately. They had no problems exchanging it for a WS version.

Also, another unfortunate FS event happened to me this past Christmas. I was at EB perusing their used dvds (they had a buy 2, get 1 free sale going) and saw the Predator SE. I hadn't picked this up when it initially came out, so I thought I'd go ahead and snag it there. I totally forgot that they had made seperate WS/FS versions, and there was no indication on the packaging or discs to let me know what it was. Needless to say, it was the fullscreen version, and that EB was about 100 miles away before I found out about it.

You need to have a little fun with this. Take it in and say that it's defective. When they ask what's wrong, say "It doesn't have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Something must be wrong with the DVD."

For maximum effect, you need to get it on film....

I usually order online myself. I bought a disc last week, got home and put it on the table. It dawned on me I didn't even look to see if it was full or wide. Thank goodness it was the wide.

I never thought it would happen to me, but I was shopping at Best Buy and just purchased the Bourne Identity. As I was leaving the store, a stunning blonde glanced at my purchase and said "Ooh, hot choice. Someone modifying a movie to fit my screen is so incredibly sexy." Too distracted to realize the implications of what she'd said, I immediately talked her into coming back to my place.

As soon as I walked in the door, I threw the DVD on the table and she ripped off all of her clothing. At that moment, the Fullscreen banner across the top of my DVD caught my eye and her earlier words sunk in. I panned and scanned from her naked body to the DVD several times, but I knew I'd never be able to perform while thinking of her watching and enjoying her mutilated films.

I handed her the movie as I escorted her from my house and pointed her toward my Joe Six Pack neighbor. I heard the sound of their lovemaking for the rest of the afternoon. Now I curse my widescreen television and blasted original aspect ratios.

Did it before, with Pitch Black and Scarface. Noticed before opening, returned them.

Not so with Mean Girls. The supermarket(!) where I bought it stocked only full-screen. I really wanted to see it, so I opened it and watched it. I didn't mind that much. I can always give it to someone down the line when and if I buy the WS version.
