Ridley Scott talks: Kingdom of Heaven [Director's cut]
The upcoming Ridley Scott Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven" clocks in at around 135 minutes, but be prepared for a multi-disc set some time next year which will add another full hour of footage.
The assorted actors and Scott himself confirmed today that the original cut of the film clocked in at a little over three hours (around 195 mins). Actress Eva Green revealed that the longer cut focuses more on the characters, and less on the crusades themselves.
Amongst the stuff edited out is more of the love story between Green and Bloom's character, and a subplot involving her son. Green says her Lady Macbeth style tragic character is more complex in the longer version - a journey of self discovery.
Why then did they bother with a shorter theatrical cut? Scott says "The DVD world is a different experience. A theatrical audience goes out to see the movie, and I think to a degree there's a tolerance...do you think operas tend to be a bit long? do you think theatre tends to be a bit long? You think 'oh my god' there's going to be another act...The extended version, you can tell why we had certain scenes in the extended version. The one that went out was the best version, no question about it in my opinion."

Sounds, good. I'm really looking forward to seeing this next month.
Sounds like we'll get the theatrical version on DVD first, given that this directors cut isn't slated to release until next year according to that article.

Semantics, I guess. Calling the extended version the "director's cut" suggests somebody else edited the theatrical version, which isn't the case.

The director's cut is not always what gets shown in the theater. Sometimes it has to do with ratings and other times it just has to do with time constraints. Some movies will draw less people if they run longer so therefore they are trimmed down. This doesn't mean that the longer version isn't what the director ultimately wants released as their film. I can't speak for Ridley Scott on this one to whether or not it is his cut of the movie.

Exactly, sometimes the studio forces the director to cut more than they'd like for the theatrical version for content, time etc.
So in that case it isn't really the directors cut.
No way to tell right now if that's the case here or not.

I guess I'm misinterpreting that, I took it to mean the theatrical version.

I guarantee someone will come back furious when the extended DVD release comes out, completely forgetting about this announcement, which is probably a year ahead of time.

I took it to mean he's happy with the theatrical cut and the extended is to give us more of a good thing.
If the film is indeed as good as I hope it is, I'll try to hold out for the extended but may get both if a good deal arises.

Well the DC of Legend was actually better than the TC. Not night & day better but better nonetheless.
