Can't say I've heard of any of those. Except Thomas Crown Affair, but then again, I'm not a big Western buff prior to the re-emmergence of the Western in the '80s.

What I find unappealing with older Westerns is the unrealistic costumes. The skin-tight slick leather and the Sunday church-esk vests. I prefer the dirtier, rougher, loose-hanging outfits. Oh, and don't forget the scruffy faces. In a lot of those older films, every cowboy and gunslinger was clean shaven, and that's just not the typical appearance of an old cowboy.

Are we sure about that? DVD Answers original announcement ran:

MGM Home Entertainment has also announced a release of the original Thomas Crown Affair which stars Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Paul Burke and Jack Weston. This Norman Jewison directed film, will be available to own from the 17th May, priced at around $14.95. The film itself will be presented in both 1.85:1 letterbox and full frame, along with English Mono tracks. Extra material will include an audio commentary by Director Norman Jewison, an eight-page booklet featuring Trivia, Production Notes and a Revealing Look at the Making of the Film and the films original theatrical trailer.

HUNTING PARTY is probably one of the most violent western (for 1971) gene hackman does some nasty things in this film, fitrst with a chinese prostitute, then what he does to candice bergen is kinda repellent.

Several of these titles need to be added to the DVD Talk list of upcoming releases. I found out about next month's release of "Princess and the Pirate" by checking Amazon for it today. I checked back at DVD Talk to see if any other Bob Hope movies would be released at the same time, but even that one wasn't listed.

For what it's worth, Hour of the Gun has a wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Still no Rio Conchos, El Condor, Broken Arrow or 100 Rifles either? Come on people. But I am excited for Major Dundee.

For me the big western day is on 05/24 when Fox releases Drums Along the Mohawk, Buffalo Bill, Broken Lance, In Old Arizona, Forty Guns and especially Dymtryk's Warlock. Banner day.
