"On second thought..." Ever been persuaded to change your opinion of a film?

anyone want to confess to a film that someone else (on this forum or not) talked you into liking, or appreciating, that you initially despised? or, to films that another talked you into disliking which you intially admired?

I was initially on the fence about Million Dollar Baby, but my girlfriend gave a devastating deconstruction of the film that convinced me to change my mind.

anyone else want to admit to being persuaded?

No one holds such sway over my impressions, but I changed my own mind in regards to THE COLOR PURPLE, a film I despised in my teen years (maybe I wanted my Spielberg to always be of the Indy Jones variety?), but now have come to adore so much that the only negative against it is that, after about an hour-and-a-half, it comes to an end.

I second Filmmaker's sentiment. Nobody's ever managed to change my opinion, but my own tastes have evolved. I saw What Dreams May Come when I was in my early teens. It's the only movie I've ever walked out of. I watched it again a few weeks back, and I adored it. Silly how that works.

By the way, I'd be interested in hearing your girlfriend's opinions on MDB.

she was most critical of the supporting characters, or as she referred to them: caricatures. thought just about every character was a cliché of sorts. upon reflection, I agreed with her, lowering my opinion of the film.

oh, and apparently my girlfriend was really annoyed by all of swank's lines that ended with "boss."

Nope. No matter how many times they've tried, I still hate Blue Velvet and Brazil, boss.

That was my biggest complaint, too...but one of many.

When I first saw The English Patient, I hated it with everything I had. Couldn't stand it, and found myself wishing I had those three hours back.

For years, a friend of mine had been suggesting I re-watch it, just to see if my tastes had since changed. I was able to appreciate the movie much more on the second viewing.

Now, I don't hate it quite so much.

It hasn't happened yet, but I wouldn't rule it out. A friend of mine just wrote a positive review of Secret Things, which he disliked as much as I did on first viewing it. He revisited the film and liked it a lot more. Based on his change of heart I'll probably go back and watch it again myself - no guarantees that I'll like it though.

Not really an answer to your question but I was very frustrated the first time I watched Blow-Up. My subsequent viewings I have felt I understood it more on my own terms.

My own oppionions seem to change with time as well. I usually like a movie a little more than I should right after I see it. Then with Matrix Reloaded, my enjoyment (or acceptance) for the movie was based on my feelings as to how Revolutions would tie everything together. I assumed that directors that made a movie as good as the first Matrix would not leave so many plot holes and enigmas once the trilogy was completed. Add that to the fact that 2 and 3 were shot together, I figured the mysteries in part 2 would become clearer in 3 thus they did not annoy as much until 3 came out.

Commentary tracks (the film scholar/historian variety) have prompted me to rethink my opinion on certain films. Although I can't remember doing a complete 180, I've often managed to gain some appreciation for the film or at least understand why others might enjoy it.

Not me, but after my best friend and I saw the Dawn of the Dead remake, he thought it sucked (and I really enjoyed it). Somehow I swayed him to elevate his opinion of the movie to "decent" later that night.

Oh, man, I agree with Super Troopers. I borrowed the DVD from a friend and didn't care for it. For some reason, though, I'd catch the airings on HBO and it really grew on me.

I've never been pursuaded by another *person* to change my mind about a movie... but I've occasionally changed my mind after revisiting.

The two that leap to mind are The Princess Bride (which I disliked my first time watching and loved ever since... I think I just wasn't expecting what I got on the first viewing) and The Abyss (which Cameron recut brilliantly, turning it from an incredible disappointment into one of my favorite films).

But, usually I'm a pretty good judge of quality and my own tastes. I don't usually have those "second thought" moments with a movie. Sometimes a really detailed commentary track can help me appreciate a movie more, I suppose...

After many talks about films I've often changed my opinion about them. I really can't do a list of stuff since it's all in the past and I really don't keep count. But I'm always up for a good discussion about a film and I do get a lot out of it and my opinions of a flick can change.

At best I can say some films I used to really like I saw again and thought sucked horribly. Like...Willow. Can't say anyone has changed my mind though.
