Just curious if there are any more recent movies that have a fire fight that compares to the fire fight in Heat?

Does Black Hawk Down count
I think it was Breaking News that had a pretty impressive opening "fire fight", not only from the stand point of what's going on on the screen but how the filmed it. You pan in/around the entire fire fight for 5 or 10 mins w/o a cut/whip pan/anything, just all one smooth pan.

maybe the pilot it was based on? LA Takedown? here's a pic...
EDIT: I read that the bank heist scene is very similar in both films, nearly shot for shot in some places. would be interesting to compare. Mann has said that LA Takedown was a rehearsal for Heat.

Well, I think you'll have a rough time finding much that really compares to Heat. Most action films heavily stylize their fire fights, while Heat really hit home with its rather realistic way of setting up and filming its massive LA streets firefight. I too would recommend Black Hawk Down if you want a most impressive realistic firefight.
If you want pure stylized mayhem, Hard Boiled is the ticket though.

It doesn't quite compare to HEAT but 3000 Miles To Graceland had some decent gun action.

Collateral has a decent one in the club
but I think Heat is best. in part due to the audio. in most movies the gunfire is somewhat muted (and often dubbed in generic gun fire noise and not the noise from the guns used in the shot) but Heat really captured it.
Gunfire up close is LOUD. That guy going deaf in Blackhawk Down is totally realistic. I wouldn't want to shoot and AR15/M16 without plugs or muffs, I couldn't imagine being in front of one that was going off
