Prior to This Week's Release, What Did You Believe Bambi's Sex to Be?
Previous to now, I believed Bambi was a female. My, how I was wrong. I hadn't seen this movie for a very, very long time. From his name to his appearance, Bambi has several feminine qualities that led to my assumption. Were you also confused?
Note: The question is about Bambi's sex, not his gender.

I have to agree with Sierra Disc.
At the beginning of the movie, he is referred to as a prince at least twice before his name is mentioned by his mother. At the end he has antlers. I'm not what you would call the hunting type, but even as a kid I knew only boy deer had antlers.
At no point in the movie does Bambi exhibit feminine traits. However, thru nearly half the movie he does exhibit infant-like and child-like traits. Maybe that confuses some people.
What might lead to this confusion is that, for most of us, we only know of girls named Bambi. Thank goodness.
However, I do have to wonder what there was about this movie that compelled some women to start naming their daughters after a male character in a Disney movie. Or some women to change their name to it. If I'm not mistaken, Bambi is like Wendy from Peter Pan. The name was never used for a person's name before the book was published.

Gender refers to the roles assigned to males and females in a society, such as the man is the bread-winner and the woman takes care of the children. It is a psychological characteristic.

I'm with everyone else. Too many things in this movie told that Bambi was a male, with no room whatsoever for confusion.
I also don't think gender could have been mistaken, either. I don't recall Bambi taking on any behavioral or cultural roles in the woodland society that would have suggested anything except being male.

I don't know. I think Bambi wears too much mascara and he keeps those antlers of his as short as possible. Something just ain't right with him.
Seriously though, the question isn't asking if you are confused after seeing the film. I, and many others around here, do not generally see films that aren't available on DVD, so many folks are seeing this film for either the first time or again after a very long time.

Even as a kid, I knew Bambi was a boy.
Two and a half minutes into the film:
Thumper: Whatcha gonna call him?
Bambi's mom: Well...I think I'll call him Bambi.

Before I have seen the movie, I thought Bambi was a girl simply because Bambi sounds like a girl's name, even for an animated character. It is prolly one of the few times the Disney guys gave a main character such a feminem name since Dumbo and Goofy.

It's the co-opting of the name as a ditzy-girly name, if it weren't for that, I don't think anyone would be confused. Except of course I agree with everyyone else: if you've ever seen the movie, how could you be confused? They refer to Bambi as "him" from the beginning.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I knew Bambi was a male deer but had no idea Flower was a boy. I mean his name is flower and he acts kinda femalish.
