What are Hollywood premieres like?
One of the wife's old high school buddies is a director. He invited us out to Hollywood for the premiere in July of his new movie. Does anyone know what these Hollywood premieres are like? Is it like a formal affair? What can we expect? My kids are going ape shit over the idea. I'd like to manage some of their expectations. Thanks in advance for whatever input I can get.

Well, depends on how big the movie is. If it's a summer blockbuster type deal, expect lots more fans lined up around, red carpets and photographers, and a big expensive ass party. A smaller film expect something a little more subdued. Otherwise, you're just watching the movie with lots of people who are involved, and some other famous people (ie, expect lots of clapping for every single damn credit in the movie). But these things vary depending upon the movie. For instance, Armageddon had a huge bash for its premiere, with a massive, overly expensive party and a special location. Whereas many premieres will simple be held at the Paramount theater or the more high profile ones at Chinese Mann or in Westwood, followed by a party. Others will be even less elaborate. So, depends on the movie.

yeah, dress a bit up, but leave the suit and tie at home. You'll see the stars, producers, director, etc. of the film. You will hear a lot of clapping on the opening credits and when the actors come on the screen depending on how popular the actors are. after party is always fun and filled with chit chat. free drinks and popcorn
For the Grudge, there was a lot of SMG (lol another shorten name) crazed folks in the theater hounding her and Michelle Trachtenberg for autographs. Bruce was in typical casual Hawaiian style button up shirt

E! used to air live footage from some of the big premieres, but I don't think they do anymore. I remember the premieres for most of the Jerry Bruckheimer produced movies were huge events.

My sister and I went to two Hollywood premieres last year one for Harold and Kumar and one for Taxi. They were a lot of fun and my sister got a pic with Jimmy Fallon and Jennifer Esposito. For Harold and Kumar they didn't let us take digital cameras in for some reason but they gave us free White Castle burgers and had an open bar. John Cho and Kal Penn seemed pretty cool too.
