Speculation of a newer version/model of GBA for 2005
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – While Nintendo's next generation console gaming system likely won't hit living rooms until 2006, that doesn't mean the company won't introduce new hardware this year. A new analyst report suggests the company is planning to ship the next version of the Game Boy portable gaming system by the end of 2005.
If so, that would be the third new handheld gaming system in as many years for Nintendo, whose Nintendo DS was one of the hottest items of the 2004 holiday season and Game Boy Advance SP was one of the must-have gifts of 2003. The new Game Boy would face stiff competition, though, from Sony's PSP – which will hit U.S. stores in March.
"We believe it is likely that the next version of the Game Boy Advance SP will ship as early as this holiday, ahead of most expectations of calendar year 2006," wrote P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research.
The new system, he predicts, will launch at a $99 price point, with prices on the Game Boy Advance falling to $49. Nintendo DS prices, he wrote, will likely remain unchanged.
Nintendo representatives were unavailable for comment.

I wonder if they finally got some hardware working that can play the GCN discs. Wasn't that one of the reasons they went with a small disc? Potential gameboy that could handle them? That would be sweet. Knock the PSP on its ass.

Ah, gone are the days where the original Gameboy lasted 10+ years
Although in all fairness, the SP was an update to the original GBA, and they reiterated a few times that the DS isn't the true successor to the GBA. Although at $99, i'm unsure how big of a leap this new Gameboy would be over the previous versions.

You can't go by price though, because we have no way to no what it costs to make. Consoles are always sold at a loss, they may be willing to take a big hit to steal the PSPs thunder by having a more powerful machine that costs $100-150 less than the PSP.
Have to wait and see on that, as well as the release date as it's not official yet.

If it turns out to be real it means Sony has managed to scare the sleeping Giant, which means all hell is going to break loose.

It would have to kick ass for me to consider it. I have an old GBA, and an SP, and I'm still kinda pissed about how quickly they expected people to upgrade, especially for a backlight which should have been in the design in the first place.

I'll be hesitant with the GBA successor for the same reason I am with the PSP- probably 99% 3D games. I got a GBA for 2D gaming as portability isn't important to me as I rarely game on the go.

So this is actually brand new hardware rather than the old GBA hardware in some new type of casing (maybe with proper backlit etc.)? Like old GBA -> GBA SP -> SP2?
If they can make something thats competitive with the psp performance-wise, but still maintains a similar form factor to the SP then I'll be interested. I think a clam design is always better for screen longevity. $99 seems really low though...

I'll have to see about this one. Obviously though they can't let the PSP go the way it is right now with no real competition. The will have to counter with a handheld that has PSP type graphics. Don't think it will strictly be a pocket GameCube though. A device that ran on GameCube discs would probably have about an hour of battery life tops.

Regardless, I used the sleeping giant metaphor because its fairly common for industry folk to refer to Nintendo in this way, or sleeping dragon, or sleeping asskicker, whatever.

Guys, I'm confused. When I first read the article I took it to mean the next generation of the Nintendo handheld. I wrote a rant based on that. Then I reread the article and this sentence made me think it's just a newer model of the GBA SP
But now I'm just confused.
I'll edit the title of the thread to reflect the meaning of the article, someone just tell me what it is heh.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just an SP with built-in wireless connectivity. It could possibly have a better screen too (something like the DS screen which is of higher quality than the GBA's). I don't think it will be a more powerful system or anything like that.
When they say the GBA will drop to $49, do they mean the original or the SP?
