Braveheart: Worst Oscar winner.. evar

http://film.guardian.co.uk/News_Stor...424405,00.html

Few people would argue that the best picture Oscar has ever been a foolproof index of the finest movies ever made. But some winners, it would seem, are less deserving than others - like Braveheart, for example.

Mel Gibson's woad-smeared, Brit-bashing epic has been named the all-time worst best picture by Empire magazine, leading a top 10 of similar duff choices. The film won the Academy Award in 1995, with Gibson also being honoured as best director.

Runner-up in the Oscar hall of shame was A Beautiful Mind, which triumphed in 2002. The magazine hailed the "wilfully dishonest screenplay" and "clunkily intricate direction" of Ron Howard's biopic.

I'd have to respectfully disagree about Braveheart.

Not surprising coming from a British magazine.

IMO, it's "The English Patient", give me a break with that narcoleptic wank-fest.

From the article:
The "tawdry circus spectacle" otherwise known as 1952's The Greatest Show on Earth was at number three.

Yeah, I'll second (er, third) The English Patient as the worst Best Picture winner ever.

Braveheart sucked, but no more so than Gladiator, Driving Miss Daisy, Forrest Gump, or Out of Africa.

They also feel the love for Gibson's The Patriot?

Ugh, I forgot about Forrest Gump. That gives The English Patient a run for it's money.

I am shocked no one has mentioned Titanic. Great special effects and a story which is so cliched and manipulative it's pathetic.

Gladiator is definately the worst.

Braveheart was by far one of the best pictures to ever win the Best Picture award. Acting, Directing, Score, Cinematography are all spectacular.

I need to chime in and say that i agree with their appraisal that Ordinary People is undeserving of Best Picture. Watched it a few weeks ago because my girlfriend had never seen it and I was... underwelmed.

The English Patient is the worst movie to win Best Picture. I even made a thread about it.

Other than Return of the King, Braveheart was the last film that was deserving of the Best Picture Oscar. All the winners between are worse. Rocky is on their list? Those brits need to lay off the reefer, and maybe actually watch the films they decided to shit on.

Actually I would vote for Gigi as the worst film to win best picture

It came out the same year as Vertigo & Touch of Evil.
