'Robot' Director in Time-Travel Thriller

By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "I, Robot" director Alex Proyas is attached to shoot the supernatural thriller "Knowing."

The project is the story of a man who unearths a 1950s time capsule with children's drawings predicting the future. One set of drawings depicts horrible events that already have come true, but one of the events has not occurred, and the man sets out to prevent it from happening.

Proyas also directed the films "Dark City" and "The Crow."

The project is set up at Sony-based producer Escape Artists, but does not have a studio home.

Reuters/Hollywood Reporter

This sounds like an interesting concept. I do like the feel of Dark City and The Crow, not I, Robot no so much. What do you guys think about the potential of this movie?

Wait... isn't "Knowing" by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko)? I seem to remember reading about a script written by Kelly with the same premise as the one mentioned in the article...

I remember one of the scripts Kelly was working on was a film about a time capsule that was called Knowing, but from the interviews I've read, he never mentioned anything other than that it involved a time capsule. So I'm guessing this is the same Knowing.

So let's see....

Alex Proyas?

Alex Proyas without Akiva Goldsman?

Alex Proyas with Richard Kelly?

Sounds pretty good. The story looks like it suits Proyas' style.

Ditto. Hoping it's more Dark City than I, Robot though.

If Richard Kelly is involved as it would seem, my hopes for the movie have really gone up. Sometimes it's just nice knowing that a really good movie could be coming. With all the blockbuster movies with prepackaged hype, I like to think that the few creative people in Hollywood will give us something we haven't seen yet.

That was the same exact plot of Richard Kelly's next film. I remember telling my friend about the idea and we talked about how cool of an idea it is.

That is why I'm torn on Proyas. I love everything he has done(haven't seen Garage Days yet), and would love him to make more movies more often. But as soon as that happens I know the quality/magic whatever would decline.

Lucky you. If it weren't for the name recognition, I would have turned it off after the first hour.

Agreed.

IMO, I think Proyas is an overrated filmmaker.

If Proyas is in the form he was with Dark City and The Crow, this could be quite a stunning movie.

I concur. The Crow wasn't that great and Dark City had a genius idea but Proyas probably didn't write it. Dark City was a fine movie until the Powerman 5000 cringe-inducing scene.

I'm actually one of the few people who enjoyed Garage Days. Not a perfect film by any means, but an enjoyable 100 minutes of visual and entertaining fluff.

Same. Dark City is my all time favorite movie. I just watched I, Robot tonight, and thought it seemed very bland.

Actually, he's credited with the story for Dark City and he shares screenplay credit with two other writers, but that sounds like he was very involved in writing it.

Hmm... I've seen that teaser somewhere before and would have never known it was Proyas. Nic Cage I could live without, but it still looks pretty solid. Not as supernatural as the premise indicates though.

Looks OK...from the original synopsis it would have been creepier if it was actual specific drawings of events, not just this number stuff...but hopefully Proyas makes this better than it seems.

I read a few posts up there saying that they're happy that Richard Kelly was attached to it and not one of them based Southland Tales... then I saw the date.

Can't see the trailer while at work so I'll withhold some judgment. The plot sounds cool but I'm not so big on Nic Cage. He's enjoyable in movies such as National Treasure but I can't see him doing so great in a "dark" film. Proyas has my hopes up though.
