Why isn't Tobey Maguire doing any more movies?

I love it when people ask these questions when it's clear that the actor is getting work or in the middle of projects.
You figure that getting his back getting hurt and almost missing playing the role of Peter Parker because of Seabiscuit inbetween Spidey 1 and Spidey 2 taught him a lesson in not squeezing to much inbetween roles. Spidey 3 is set to be released in 2007. That would mean that later this year pre-production should be kicking around so it's not like he really needs to push himself.
Why risk getting any more injury or pushing himself before Spidey 3? Can actors do 3 or more movies per year? Sure. Many times when you see a lot of movies back to back with the same actors it's usually because a films release date was pushed back or just happens to get released close to each other (see jude law) But that doesn't mean actors need to be constantly on a job.

Basically, if an actor just starred in two mega budget, massive blockbusters (not to mention a few other decent grossers) you can chalk up their lack of work to their own decisions. Whether it be keeping themselves safe, or just taking a break, they obviously just don't feel like working constantly. Keep in mind when doing a film like Spiderman 2, it's not simply the shooting schedule, which for a movie like that is long, I'd guess 6 months if not more. Tack on workout schedules, then a very long promotion route, Tobey's involvement in Spidey 2 is quite a commitment, as will be part 3.
I saw someone ask the same question about Cameron Diaz, and some people were boneheaded enough to believe it was because she can't get roles. When they're at the top of their game, they can be a bit more picky.
Plus, he surely can wipe his ass with hundred dollar bills, so it's not like he needs to work.

Not only was Spidey 2 an extensive role for him, it did indeed leave him with a lot of interntaional promotions and dvd sales just kicked off so I'm sure that is part of his committment to the film. Not to mention doing a good workout schedule for prep work leading into Spidey 3. That would keep him busy. Just because you don't see an actor for a year in something doesn't mean they are out to hang. Far from it.

Probably just taking time to himself. I know if I made that kind of money I'd take extended breaks in between work.

Actors are people. People work. When they work a lot, they need time off. Actors make enough money that they can afford to take a lot of time off, if they see fit.

The tabloids are saying he's staying out of the public eye because.....
he got fat and doesn't want his fans to see him looking flabby.
I thought it was funny they felt there had to be some reason why he wasn't being a publicity whore like other celebs.

The guy kicked his own ass training to be ripped for spidey 3, has another year or so before he needs to be in shape, and in the mean time has money falling out of his pockets. You might gain a couple pounds, too.
