Thanks, Counter-Strike - I just destroyed my $70 mouse
It was a good mouse.
But jesus christ, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is a motherfucker. I swear the goddamn thing is rigged.
I'm playing through the hard missions (only the third difficulty level out of four.) The games are set up so that you play a number of rounds of Counter-Strike, and whichever team pulls ahead by two games wins. But it's not that simple: the designers build in separate tasks that you must complete for your team to win. If your team pulls ahead by two, but you haven't completed them, you just keep playing.
I'm playing the Militia level, and I have a decent number of "reputation points," so I have a pretty good team: three four-point guys and a two-point guy. And I've gotten to be pretty good, so my team pulls ahead quickly.
But I have to complete two tasks, at some point. The first isn't too tough - "rescue all four hostages" (in one round.) The second is much worse: "Kill a flashbang-blinded enemy and survive the round." I try, repeatedly, and yet the bots on the Hard level are way too hard to flashbang, so I have to keep playing that stage until I manage to do so. And so, we were up nine games to two, and yet we still hadn't "won" because none of my flashbangs blinded anyone (except, occasionally, me.) I can deal with that.
But here's the problem: My team just falls apart at some point. The first several rounds, we just tear up the terrorist bot team. It usually pulls even after that - the matches get tighter.
At some point, either the enemy bot intelligence ramps way up, or my teammates turn into idiots. My team just lost six rounds in a row. And the matches weren't even close: my guys were getting mowed down like grass.
The most frustrating thing is that I've experienced this - on this stage - repeatedly. Playing 18 straight rounds of Counter-Strike, only to lose the whole thing because 0 out of 18 flashbang grenades failed to blind any enemies, is just maddening. This is the fourth time this scenario has occurred.
We lost the last round without killing a single enemy. A quarter of a second later, my wireless Microsoft Intellimouse... well, my mouse decided to join the eulogy. It had a brief flight into the wall across the room, and now its buttons are ajar and it doesn't transmit any signal.
This story is most surprising because I have a really, really long fuse - I almost never lose my temper. But holy crap, I've just wasted another hour playing CS, and I'm still stuck on this same freakin' stage because the AI is rigged.

heh. CS turned me into a mouse purist. At one point I wouldn't even consider using a wireless or optical mouse because they weren't precise enough for me.
I think MS has a lifetime warranty for their mice, however.

I do not really play a lot of CS nowadays as I have gotten so used to playing Call of Duty online.
I can relate to the swearing, cussing, and damaging keyboard & mouse whenever I play FPS multiplayer. There would be times that I would just find myself playing incredibly well, and totally play like a newbie the next day. For some reason, I cannot have that consistent playing skill that most (if not all) players acquire after hundreds of hours.
My wife would usually ask me why I would constantly play FPS of which my reason would be that playing is a great stress-reliever after a long day of work. But then, she'd hear me swear my ass off across the other end of the house....talk about stress-relief!!!!
By the way, I am also sometimes like that when I play poker online. Thank god that I do not play in casino or I would've been thrown in jail for disturbing the peace.

Microsoft is pretty friendly with their warrenty though, and typically replace your mice for free
