Has anyone else upgraded without watching the older DVD?
I am just wondering if I am the only DVD addict who has done this. I only do it when I have a chance to get the upgraded version for a really good price or a trade. I did this with several movies last year when Blockbuster had their $8 minimum trade-in credit - I had some old 1-disc sets, traded them for credit and got the 2-disc SEs from Columbia House at an average of $6-7.
Here are some movies I have upgraded with ever having seen the film:
Master and Commander (great trade for the 2-disc set)
Hellboy Got 3-disc DC at Blockbuster 2/$20.
The Right Stuff Blockbuster / CH upgrade
The Great Escape Ditto
These are films I have seen but had never watched the older DVD:
The Good, the bad, and the Ugly Blockbuster/CH upgrade
Escape from NY Ditto
Predator Ditto
True Romance Great buy from half.com, $10.50 shipped
Pulp Fiction Ditto, $12.50
(Note - the last two are not available from CH).

That is not exactly what I mean - rather when you DO own the older DVD and for some reason never get around to watching it, before buying / trading for the better version. Especially when the older DVD was a blind buy, such as Master and Commander was for me - though I am sure I will like it, it is my kind of film, as well as a great home theater demo disc (according to many).

No, I can't say that I've ever done that. There's so many DVDs out there that I'd like to have, that it doesn't make sense to buy another DVD of a movie that I can't even be bothered to watch the first time. I only double-dip on movies I really like anyway, though.

I don't believe I've ever done that. If I haven't watched the original by the time newer version comes out, then it probably isn't a high priority. However, I would do it if I could sell the original for the cost of the new one.

In any event, I almost never keep the multiple editions - even when there might be a reason to, such as the additional extras on the LOTR Theatrical DVDs vs the EEs. The only exceptions are a couple movies where I have both superbits and regular editions - so I can compare them someday, when I have a good enough TV.

Absolutely! Most DVD's sit in my waiting to be viewed que for years. By that time the new one comes out and I buy and then that sits for two years. Old one mostly is sold off.
"Raging Bull"
"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"
"Heat"
"Donnie Darko"
"Leon: The Professional"
"The Shawshank Redemption"
etc...
You name it...I haven't watched it!

I can't actually recall having done this (although I probably have...). Still, if I were inclined to buy a DVD over again without having seen the first DVD, I'd watch the first DVD before I re-buy.
