"Raging Bull" 2-Disc CE...couldn't they have changed the insert?

Just got this today...

First of all this is a gorgeous set. The art work on the disc, the digipak, and slipcase are first rate and one of the best in my collection. Just icing on the cake for one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of my time.

But, I kept the old insert (from the previous incarnation) just in case and then compared it with the new one...it is pound for pound or better yet word for word exactly the same. The photos and art work are different, but couldn't they have jazzed it up or at least have different stories?

I don't see the point of including the exact same insert as the inferior version.

Do you?

What kind of "different stories" ? If the information is correct and decently written, I don't see the problem, especially since for the majority of buyers, it will be "new".

Yes. There are many people, including myself, who purposely never bought the previous release. There are also many who will buy the film in the future who were not in the market for the original release (because they didn't have a DVD player yet, because they didn't have any interest in the film yet, etc.). For all of these people, the insert text will be new material.

They'd have to pay someone to write the new copy, and odds are pretty good that there are way more people buying this for the first time who won't know the difference than people upgrading. I'm just glad to hear there's an insert, period.

I'm one of those people who has purposely been waiting several years for this new release since I knew it would look better and be anamorphic, so the insert is "new" to me. However, I never read or look at inserts anyway.

Well, I dunno... Just thought I would chime in and say that I'm another who never picked up the previous non-anamorphic release. So, it'll be new to me... Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Hell...I'd be happy just to have it early. I for one DO have the first release, but don't care what they stick inside as far as inserts go. I make my own info booklets for the case, so whatever.

This is definitely a case of "if it ain't broke..."

Most people will either (a) be replacing the old version or (b) be buying this for the first time. If the first insert was decent -- and it was -- I don't see the need to reinvent the wheel.

MGM always does this - they take the text of the older release's insert, and use it in the newer version's insert with nicer artwork.

I don't see a problem with this, as all the info in the inserts are solid, and there'd be little to add or take away from them. True, they're not Criterion level inserts, but hey, you get what you pay for.

As for this Raging Bull release, I love the paper texture they used - it's sorta rough and not the typical finger-print magnet you usually run into.

I already sold my old version about a year ago. Was there any reason to keep it? Difference in extras, trailers..... anything?

I assume you're judging from what's visible in the photos. Check out his full collection, and post yours as well, before slinging mud. His collection has a few duds (whose doesn't?), but it looks pretty damned solid overall.

My only question, Scott, is why do you store your DVDs upside down?

Don't you know - you're supposed to rotate your DVD cases - just like your mattress.

I'm surprised no one else has commented on this. So the person that has your old version is short the insert now? Nice guy. I'm sure you're going to send that person the insert now. Right?

For those interested in things beyond secondary considerations (like packaging) check out this review.

That's what I'd like to know...

Thanks for the excellent pics, by the way!
