My handful of top favorite movies are all 4 stars in my movie guide, they are all enjoyable and perfect to me and the reason why a lot of movies don't get 5 stars is something really stupid only a critic would look for. For example Predator which back in the day used to be my favorite movie of all time, i adored this movie and read everything i could about the making of it, it was given 4.5/5 in my movie guide for the sole reason of not exactly explaining why the Predator killed the people when it was mentioned many times, "Kills one by one... like a hunter" not to mention all his skull trophies and necklaces. Is this a reason why this movie is criticized for not being 5 stars? I guess i don't let critics tell me what exactly is great or not, Predator is 5 stars in my book. Predator isn't in my triumvirate of favorite movies though it has a special place though.

I'd say all my favorite films are highly rated, but considering the varying views on things, I don't think any film will necessarily be always a four star film. I lvoe Blade Runner, but especially when it was released it was hardly a four star film.

2001 is another good example. Considered one of the best films ever made these days, when released it was panned rather heavily by many critics. I know Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was hardly considered a four star film by many, but I loved it when I was growing up and am still quite fond of it. Same with Dark City. But, you're damn striaght that some people think them excellent four star films. For those two flicks, I'd agree with Roger Ebert's assessment, as he considered them four star films.

Well...it's not a universal 4 stars, but Casino is my favorite movie of all time, and that's what Ebert gave it. Bless him.

Picking five of my recent favorite movies, they are rated on RT as so:

1. Almost Famous = 89% fresh (123 positive, 15 negative).
2. Fight Club = 80% fresh (98 positive, 24 negative).
3. Dark City = 75% fresh (38 positive, 13 negative).
4. Clerks = 84% fresh (31 positive, 6 negative).
5. Battle Royale = 82% fresh (9 fresh, 2 negative).

Of course, this question depends on whether everyone agrees on every film. Since that's not the case, no way to answer it.

My favorite films are the Star Wars trilogy and Seven Samurai. Both receive great critical praise. Seven Samurai is one of the best films made. Star Wars trilogy are among the best in it's genre, but not the best ever made. But many critics would judge it 4 stars. Some don't. Others don't like it enough to care. So I don't know if it would fit that criteria. I would say both are 4 stars. But I wouldn't bet my life on it.

The Empire Strikes Back is a 4-star movie. Even people who hate Star Wars will acknowledge the greatness of that film.

Nope. My personal favorite is Batman (1989), which got some good reviews, but at the time of its release, it got a lot of mediocre ones. I remember Ebert gave it two stars. I think it's become much more welcome since it was released, but at the time, it got mixed reviews.

Well, I couldn't pick one, so when a thread like this comes up, I have to list it as just one trilogy. ESB is not really a self-contained film. Neither is ROTJ. They both are parts that complete the story. I love all 3. Even with ROTJ being the weakest, I still consider it a very good, entertaining film, ewoks and all.

Seven Samurai, no question. I love almost all of Kurosawa's films, even the Hidden Fortress, the one that was a big inspiration on Lucas and Star Wars, which might be considered his weakest.

Probably not. I love Good Will Hunting and Dazed and Confused. Most people don't consider them great. Most of my other favorites probably are. Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Those would probably be my top 5.

A prime example is Good, Bad, Ugly, 4 stars while Once Upon a Time in the West is 5 stars. Now Good is a lot more enjoyable to watch than the other..

Terminator 2 is great to me...so I suppose thats all that matters. If I looked to critics to validate my film opinions, I'd probably have to drop a lot of my favorite movies from my list.

My favorite movie finished third in the Sight and Sound poll in 2002 and 1962, and second in 1972, 1982, and 1992. It finished third in the Time Out list of best movies of all time, and second on the Village Voice list of the top movies of all time. I think it's fair to say it's probably a five-star movie...
