Retro Game Challenge #26 (1/23-1/30)

Week 26 is over!
The Rules:
  1. To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
  2. The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 9:00 PM Eastern US time.
  3. When you post a high score, pick a new game to play by the deadline. The sooner the better.
  4. The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
  5. Any scores you submit should be played during the week of the contest using no continues or any features of the emulator that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.

So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
New to MAME? Feel free to ask questions here or read the tutorials
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Astro Fighter (set 1) - Score to beat: devilshalo 14390

Klax (set 1) - Score to beat: D300 1106521

Tutankham - Score to beat: trozkd 45020

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

Trying to remember when I played Tutankham before... I think I've played it on the Atari 2600. I'd probably remember if I ever played one of these things. Nice controls!

I also found Tutankham was emulated in Sparcade and Retrocade, a couple old DOS emulators that I played a lot and only had a couple dozen games. Mystery solved!

Sorry, I kinda like the nostalgic early video game with repetitive levels.

It's more for me than anything as early games were pretty repetitive. At least it's not as hard as Moon Cresta.

You just want to win
I put about a buck fiddy into it, but only got up to about 4000 points so far.

I think it'd be pretty boring if everyone had to make an X to even attempt a high score. If you can work your way up to level 11 and complete the warp, more power to you, but it's not fair being able to start there repeatedly.
Oh baby! I absolutely love Klax (I play the hell out of it on Midway Arcade Treasures). I need to get in on this.

So I just want to be clear: If we start at Level 1... and make it to level 6 (you can do the "X pattern" to warp at level 6 too!!!)... and successfully make the "X" and warp... does that score still count?

I'm new to this whole mame retro game challenge... are there any other rules I should be aware of (besides the ones listed above)??

Yes, you can still make the X as long as you start on level 1. It's not very easy to do, so then you have to go through the first 10 levels to try again. I'll be surprised if anybody actually pulls that off within the week.

The standard rules are always in the first post. Rule #5 is really the only "rule". It basically just says don't cheat Good to see another new person this week.

So if you complete an X pattern on level 1, you can warp to another level??

No. On level 11 it tells you that if you make an X pattern you will get a "Special Warp"
That special warp gives you 700,000 points and puts you on level 56. I thought it would take the fun out of the game if we allowed starting on level 11.

I'm trying to say you're allowed to try for the X as long as you started your game on level one and had to go through the first ten levels.

It also tells you about that warp trick when you reach Level 6.

Here you go:

(I hope that works... I've never posted a pic before.)

The "overall" high score listed was my first time playing with mame after using a few continues...

But the current left player score in this pic was with one credit.

Crap, you can warp on 6 too, or any level? It seems like such a cheap way to get a ton of points. I need more opinions on what to do about this game. Anybody a Klax expert and have an opinion on this, or should we just go with the highest score however you get it? If 19k's qualifies, that means I beat him

I'd say stick with your original rule. Start on level 1, free-for-all from there. If you can make the X when you need to, great for you...

I see no problem with warping on level 6 as long as you started on level 1. Klax was a great pick because my kid can play his own game alongside with me.

The important part of starting on Level 1 for me is that you only get 3 drops instead of 4 or 5.

OK 19k, how did you get that score? If it doesn't let you warp until level 6 and you started on level 1 then we'll go with your score.

By the way, your screenshot sucks. I can't see where you died. A bad screenshot still qualifies as long as the score is on there, but you can expect me to say something snarky about it if I can't see where you died

I hadn't gotten to level 6 before my game just now. I didn't realize that there was another level selection screen. Perhaps it should be limited to only selecting the lowest level on all selection screens, thus maintaining only 3 drop allowed.

I got that score by doing Level 1...2...3...4...5...6... making the X and then warping to level 51... and then I lost.

I had a screenshot right when my turn ended, but there were so many pieces on the screen that they were blocking most of the score. So I captured at this screen where the score was completely visible.

That level selection screen appears after every 5 levels. So even if you warp to level 51 and then miraculously make it to 56 on your first turn... you can warp again up into the seventies I believe.

I play this on the PS2 all the time and have gotten as high as level 89 (using multiple continues, of course )

There's another level selection screen? Good god, this game sucks!

That being said, I'm going with the original rule: Start on level 1. I don't want to make it any more complicated than that. I don't like having to add rules, and marp.retrogames.com doesn't have any rule against warping in their contest.

So 19k has the current high score. Hopefully we'll have a better screenshot by the end of the week
