Indian Screen Actress Parveen Babi Found Dead in Apartment

Indian Screen Siren Found Dead in Apartment

2 hours, 21 minutes ago Entertainment - Reuters

BOMBAY (Reuters) - Indian actress Parveen Babi, who played the siren in dozens of Bollywood films, was found dead at her home on Saturday, a police officer said.

Police broke into the Bombay suburbs apartment where she lived alone after neighbors said her door had not been opened for two days, deputy commissioner Amitav Gupta said.

Gupta said the actress, who once featured on the cover of Time magazine as the face of the modern Indian woman, appeared to have died of natural causes. Her age was not immediately known.

Babi, famed for her unconventional western looks, starred in more than 50 Hindi films mostly in the 1970s and early 1980s.

She was cast in her first Hindi film while still a student at the Ahmedabad University, and was best known for her roles alongside Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Babi came to represent the bohemian Indian woman on celluloid, unafraid to smoke or drink on camera, at a time when these were considered taboo.

Nice looking gal.

She was probably in her 20's to '30s in the late '70s and early '80s. Quite young. Sad.

Didn't they guy who played the bad guy in Indiana Jones & Temple of Doom pass away last week?

Was he the same guy that gave the medicine to Jack Nicholson in Wolf?

Wow - I hadn't heard about this. Parveen was in quite a few films I watched in my early teens....most memorable is probably "Shaan"

Not sure how the thread turned towards Amrish Puri, but the guy in "Wolf" is Om Puri - not the same.

Yes, his name was Amrish Puri and he died at the age of 72.

However, the guy from "WOLF" and "CITY OF JOY" with Patrick Swayze is Om Puri . He's Amrish's cousin and he's still alive.

Calm down. It's still somewhat on topic since we're talking about recently deceased legendary Indian actors.

Check out "Dewaar" and "Amar Akbar Anthony". Those were her top hits.
