Evil Roy Slade DVD: Asian import or Bootleg?

I’m a big fan of this pre-Blazing Saddles comedy western, starring John Astin and Dick Shawn. Universal hasn’t released it on DVD in R1 and the VHS tape is not only OOP, but I haven’t even been able to find a local store where I can rent an old copy.

Imagine my surprise when I saw a DVD listing for this title on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

Looking at the description of this "Asian import," I immediately thought "Bootleg!" ...that is until the bidding reached nearly $40! Could this possible be a legitimate import (despite the lack of subtitles) or are people really stupid enough to pay that much money for a DVD-R copy of a VHS tape?

Has it ever been released in DVD anywhere? I couldn't find any sign of it.

The cover looks exactly like the one from the VHS. It doesn't even seem to have the Korean writing as does the one in this auction - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

Neither could I.

Thanks for the info. on this listing. I've just sent a message to that seller asking what the status of those DVDs are.

Mickey Rooney & Milton Berle are the "comedy icons" who definately have supporting roles in this TV movie...I don't remember seeing Benny in an unbilled role (I haven't seen it in years), nor is he listed in the production's IMB record. Benny did a 1960 TV-movie called The Slowest Gun in the West with Phil Silvers, so maybe that's what you're thinking of.

By the by, I went ahead and ordered one of the DVDs on eBay (the version w/o Korean lettering, but with actual Disc art.) Though I thought I was overpaying at $20 using "BUY IT NOW," other buyers spent $40-100 for the same item (different sellers). I should receive it by the beginning of next week, so I'll let people know...if anyone's interested... about image/sound quality (as well as whether I think it's a boot or not.)

I can't imagine this being anything but a bootleg. Have you looked on any of the legit Asian etailers to see if they have it? Bet they don't ....
