Master of the flying Guillotine Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Just saw this over at amazon for a 12/21/04 release. Just wondering if anyone had anymore info other than it being anamorphic. I do like the cover better than the original, but what else is on it??

Damn, I hate to double dip on this one, I thought the last release was one of the better Region 1 classic Kung Fu releases to date.

What are the extras on this?

I hope they color correct the whole movie at least.
A cool cover alone isn't going to get me to buy it again.

The old DVD may not have been fantastic, but it was good enough for me. This one would really have to bring something to the table before I'd bother double-dipping.

Jimmy Wang Yu interview, insert booklet, and photo gallery has been added. And according to Pathfinder's site, a new audio commentary with the same critics (?)

I'll hold onto my old copy.

I'd like to know if the transfer has been improved. The originally DVD suffered from an annoying "strobing" effect in numerous scenes. If the transfer is appreciably better, and anamorphic, I'd double dip on this.

I e-mailed Pathfinder back in October about this release and never got a word back from them.

Just finished watching the new 2 disc of Master of the Flying Guillotine. I didn't have the previous version so unfortunely I can't compare the two. Before the movie even started there was a screen that mentioned there was much damage to the original print, and it explained that Pathfinder did their best to try and fix the print. Flickering, or strobing that CultShock mentioned in still in a couple of scenes.

great movie.

not much on the 2nd disc. other than biographies, pictures and trailers, there are 2 interviews. one interview is with Jimmy Wang Yu in front of a 1000+ people at a tokyo film festival, runs about 12-14 minutes I believe. the second interview is a one on one interview with Jimmy Wang Yu, looks to be from a Japanese TV channel, runs about 15 minutes.

there is a commentary track, I haven't listened to it, features 3 film critics, Andy Klein, Wade Major and Alex Luu. I was hoping for some sort of text commentary with Jimmy Wang Yu or something.

How's the color in the movie?
They should have released the movie that spawned this sequal "THE ONE ARMED BOXER" aka THE CHINESE PROFESIONALS.

Well...

"They should have released the movie that spawned this sequal "THE ONE ARMED BOXER" aka THE CHINESE PROFESIONALS."

They may. I still haven't seen the disc, but it was supposed to be color corrected. BTW I wrote one set of liner notes and the piece on Wang Yu for the dvd. If my pieces seemed a little short or cut (I hope not too bad), they were shortened for room. The piece on the history of the Flying Guillotine was cut by about 50%. And the piece on Wang Yu was cut by 50%, then cut again to 75% less than what I originally had at the VERY last minute. Expect to see the full pieces in print sometime in the near future somewhere. As for the print/film, this will be the last time that First Films will be able to use their print. After this mastering job, the film is falling apart. And this is actually the start of a Pathfinder "Jimmy Wang Yu Collection." Expect the insane Knight Errant, with Jimmy taking on a killer grandma (!) and Kurata, to be winging your way in a few months. If all goes well, two or three more releases after that before the end of 2005.

This new 2-disc set may be "color-corrected", but the old, non-anamorphic dvd just looks better - better colors and sharper image. Chud.com has a comparisson (I can't find the link), but I checked the two versions also, and the old one looks better (even when zoomed in for a 16:9 tv).

Oh, and the first copy I bought of the new SE had a faulty first disc - it wouldn't play in any dvd player, and when I compared it to the 2nd disc (which played fine), the first disc didn't have any information pressed onto it... it was a blank disc!

Try here for the chud write-up. This is why when I upgrade...I never just toss out my old dvd without research. Now I have both.
