Set top dvd recorders that record dual format (+/- R/RW) - where to find?

Hey all,

A few months ago a friend of mine bought a set top dvd recorder that recorded DVD+/- R/RW form Costco for under $200. I cannot find that unit on the website or in the store anymore -- or in ANY store for that matter....

Where can i find a dual format dvd recorder for under $200 (or close to). I have seen them in the past -- but cannot find them anymore... "set top", meaning for the home theater, not the computer.... I am not really worried about brand names -- i just want to find one....

Thanks,

Matt

There's Lite-On and the new Sony models. Those are the only ones I know of other than possibly some even lower-end than the Lite-On.

Last week CompUSA had a deal on one of the Lite-On models (5005 I believe). It was a $130 instant discount plus a $20 mail-in rebate. That ended on Saturday but maybe they'll do that deal again before Christmas.

Yep, the Lite-On LV-5005 is a dual format burner with firewire input that can be hacked with firmware for macro-free recording, all-region playback, and 3 hour recording speed. . . as a playback unit it is fair at best, but fine for recording.

There is a forum for the unit and hacked firmware, but I can't seem to access it at the moment.

Be aware what you're getting into with a Lite-On. I believe none of their models will record TV in stereo and you better make sure the audio format they record in is what you want. I think they have a tendency to record in non-usual audio formats.
