DVD Player will not READ disc sometimes

I have an RCA DVD Player. Not sure off hand the model number. It is old. Got it around 99 I believe. It plays (or played) Divx back when they use to sell those. Anyway, I love this player. ITs been the best. I have two other's but they are cheap brands. Also they seem to take forever for the disc drvie door to open
Anyway I love this one. Also right now I can't get a new one no more the price.
Here the problem
I put a CD in and it says "NO DISC". No matter what DVD I use. I have to either open/close the drive 6-7 times or turn the DVD player on/off 6-7 times (or more) before it will read the disc. I can hear it and it doesn't even sound like it is trying to read anything when it says "NO DISC"

I never have cleaned the DVD player, should I? Not sure how. Or is this a bigger problem?

You can get a disc that will clean the lens but if the pickup is misaligned or the laser if failing then cleaning wont matter.

Given all the advancements in players in that space of time, if I were you I would buy a new one.

What model is it? I know of several RCA players from that era that just die all of a sudden. Doorstop city, you know?

They don't last forever, at least not at my house. I've seen 3 of them die since buying my first, and they usually start showing their problems by not reading a disc or by starting to lock up during play cycle.
