All Tomorrow's Parties (Yu Lik-Wai, Hong Kong/China) ***
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to immediately recognize how much this film resembles Jia Zhangke’s works. That is because Yu himself is Jia’s cinematographer! Indeed, the film combines the social commentary and slow camera pans of Jia’s with a strange restlessness and film gimmickry synonymous with Hong Kong cinema. However, while the film is jaw-droppingly beautiful in its utilization of stunning backdrop and digital images, it does not have the same sense of poetic eloquence of Jia’s films. But it is worth seeing just for its acidic commentary of recent Chinese history, and the path that the new generation is heading toward.
