Retro Game Challenge #18 (11/28-12/5)

Week 18 is over!
  1. [*]
  2. [*]
  3. [*]
  4. [*]
  5. [*]
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.
New to MAME? Read the tutorials

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Choplifter (bootleg) - Score to beat: Roto 222000

Mighty Monkey - Score to beat: Roto 44800

Wonder Boy in Monster Land - Score to beat: Roto 51020

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

Yeah, it has a pretty steep learning curve since you have to do more than just shoot everything in sight. The best tip I have to offer is when you land to pick up the hostages, don't sit on the ground for too long. You can prevent the tanks from showing up just by lifting off the ground a little bit every few seconds.

Figured I'd give a couple of these a try before bed...

I remember being pretty good at Choplifter on either the TI or the C64. Guess that skill fades with age..

Never played this one before, but it sort of reminds me of a really primative version of Ikaruga.

I assume that's Mighty Monkey? I only played it long enough to make sure it ran (more than I did with Choplifter ) I got it from a list of unpopular mame roms.

12 safe seems like a decent start to Choplifter.

Yeah, that's Mighty Monkey. While it's not great, I think it deserves better than one of the "worst MAME roms". The gameplay is actually sort of fun. Definitely way better than Ghostbusters...

As for Choplifter, I think it's a lot harder when you try not to just shoot everything (except the people). I do a lot better when I play aggressively than when I take it slow.

Sorry ~M~

I'm just learning this game too, so I don't expect my score to last long either. Even though I picked all the games this week the only one I'm really familiar with is Choplifter. I didn't want to owe devilshalo or PixyJunket a future game selection since wins have been rare for me lately. Where is D300 anyway?

In MAME you can take a screenshot just by hitting the F12 key. It's probably easier than however those last couple ones were made and usually looks cleaner.

It would be insanely unfair for me to submit a score this week since I actually own a Wonderboy arcade machine and my single credit scores can range from 2,000,000 to 4,000,000. I will however offer tips and advice to anybody who asks. First tip is how to make easy money.. there are places throughout each level where you can jump in the air to reveal coins, remember where these are.. when you jump to reveal these hidden coins (or bags) wiggle the joystick left and right, sometimes this will cause the money to be worth 65-68 coins instead of their usual range. If you have any whirlwind magics, shoot one off and then jump to reveal the coins.. this has a MUCH higher chance of getting the 65-68 coin bonus then wiggling the joystick. If you get a word balloon during a stage with "Oh!" or "Someone is there!", that means there's a hidden door there. Monster usually drop money first and a point bonus on the first respawn; each subsequent respawn the monster will have double HP and drop nothing. As far as magic goes, I'd only spend money on whirlwind if only to use it for the money trick. Bombs are useless, use them as soon as you get them. Fireballs are decent, whirlwinds are great against bosses and lightning is powerful all around. Drinking at the bar restores one heart which can be useful, but the translation is so poor the tips usually make little sense (and the final stage tips aren't even translated!). Another point people seem to miss is that the Heavy Armor (100G) is cheaper than Knight Armor (150G) but it IS more powerful. The payoff is that it hinders your movement a little (actually just makes you slide a lot..).

Man, this makes me want to actually finish my old site:
http://monsterland.digitalcrap.net/index.php

But.. since I'm hooked on what is essentially the online version of Monster Land, I don't see that happening soon.

Any questions or advice requests?

That online game looks pretty interesting. Where can I find a copy, and to they have some kind of free trial (if it's normally a montly fee)? I might wanna check this out for a little while.

That never stopped D300 If you change your mind and decide to submit a score (feel free to), just make sure to pick a new game because I wouldn't have any more decent guesses as to what you'd want to play.

Looks like I can start playing Choplifter now

I never owned an arcade game at home, I just owned them at the arcade.

Playing Millipede, Robotron and Defender
This week the only game that's fun to play is Wonder Boy. Who picked the other two?

I picked them all and I'm going to win them all! Mwahahahaha!

Wow, this game has the most annoying music I've ever heard, except maybe for 4D-Warriors.

Yeah, I have to play it with no sound.

I have a 24k score I'll post when I get home, so don't rest on your laurels...

Here we go:

I downloaded and played this for a little bit earlier today. Seems kinda cool so far. My wife saw me playing it and stole the computer from me for the rest of the night, and now I'm posting from work. I've created a monster!

Took me a few tries to get the perfect bonus on level 2. I remember making it to the 3rd set of hostages here is the hardest part of the entire game.

Lots of action this week That's ok, I can deal with a hollow victory. I'm going to make my game choices for next week.

Choplifter --> Bomb Jack
Wonder Boy in Monster Land --> Cameltry
Mighty Monkey --> Sinistar

If I have to pick the 3rd game again it's going to be Montezuma's Revenge for the Atari 800
