A wide-ranging new audio conversation between director Gus Van Sant and acclaimed filmmaker Todd Haynes (Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven) and will be included on Criterion’s upcoming release of My Own Private Idaho. Also included on this special edition two-disc set will be a new documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with key crew members, and many additional supplemental features. I haven't seen this one since it was released theatrically. I can't remember if I liked it or not. I'll rent first.

The Living End

I have that. It was on DVD (http://www.mondo-digital.com/splendor.html). Bought mine from Tower.

Also, Araki's Totally F***ed Up [not my censorsing] was due a December Region 4 Australia release (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/229919). Not sure now, though. Excellent DVD of Nowhere here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009KOY5/)

Not a big fan of My Own Private Idaho, but I like Van Sant, so will buy it for another look.

You think in the commentary Gus will apologize for getting River Phoenix hooked on drugs?

I have this one on VHS and haven't been able to bring myself to play it since I played my first DVD.

One of my favorite River Phoenix movies and I'll be one of the first to pick this up. Not only is the movie coming to DVD, but a Criterion release....so much talent, cut short

But, news, nonetheless!!

Yeah, Gus should apologize since he tied a rope around River's neck, strapped him to a chair and MADE HIM take drugs until he died. River Phoenix was a very talented actor and his death was a complete and utter waste, however, 23 years old at the time of his death makes him an adult that gets to take responsibility for his own actions -- including getting hooked on drugs and then dying.

On Topic: This is the LAST movie of my "Must Own List" to finally get to DVD! And Criterion on top of it? I finally get to use the dancing bananas!!:banana::banana:

Yeah, I know. I was just being sarcastic. However, River did start doing drugs as "research" for his role in this movie. Beforehand, he was known as being a clean-cut goodie two-shoes.

I heard that Corey Feldman said it was Stand By Me where they started using drugs, but who knows if that's true?

What is it with these actors getting too into their roles? River doing drugs, Winona shoplifting-jeez, I thought Dustin Hoffman staying up for 3 days was bad enough. :)

In Feldman's case, I'm sure he started doing drugs just shortly after the womb.

If I'm not mistaken another young actor from this movie - Rodney Harvey - died due to drugs.

If I'm remembering that VH1 show correctly, Feldman started doing drugs in the mid-'80's when he was hanging out with Sam Kinison. [Though, if memory serves, it wasn't Kinison himself who exposed him to the drugs, it was people around Kinison.] But that might've been harder stuff like cocaine, he might've started smoking pot when he started hanging around on porn sets...

I should watch that show again; it has one of my favorite interview clips ever, which is Feldman saying, towards the end, something like "You know, a lot of bad stuff has been said about me, and they're right," [that was paraphrased, but this part is definitely what he said:] "but nobody has ever accused me of not being talented."

So, from other threads it seems that this disc has hit the streets a tad earlier than expected... though not at any of my usual haunts. Is Best Buy the only B&M that seems to have it in stock at this point?

I was hoping that someone who's managed to find a copy could give us some details as the Criterion webpage still lists "More!" under the special features. I'd love to know what "More!" to expect!

Ah Fry's... wish they'd open some up on the East Coast! Seems like there are always good DVD deals there. OK, off to Best Buy....
