"Inappropriate" Housewives...Much Ado About Nothing

Sigh. How could ABC violate the sanctity of our National Pastime like this?? [oh wait...that's baseball, isn't it?]

Thank GOD Bush was re-elected. I'm sure there'll be another lengthy government probe similar to "Nipplegate" to see that the evildoers are brought to justice.
ABC Apologizes for Intro to 'Monday Night Football' Opening Spoofed ABC Show 'Desperate Housewives'

NEW YORK (Nov. 17) -- ABC apologized Tuesday for a steamy intro to "Monday Night Football'' after receiving complaints from viewers and the National Football League.

The spot featured a supposedly naked Nicollette Sheridan jumping into the arms of Terrell Owens.

Before the game, ABC showed the actress and the Philadelphia Eagles star in an empty locker room in an attempt to spoof the network hit "Desperate Housewives.'' Sheridan, who stars in the show, was wearing only a towel and provocatively asked Owens to skip the game for her.

After she dropped her towel, he smiled, agreed to be late for the contest and she jumped into his arms. Sheridan was shown only from behind and above the waist after she dropped the towel.

Then the shot cut to two more stars of "Desperate Housewives,'' Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, watching the scene unfold on a television and commenting on desperate women.

"We have heard from many of our viewers about last night's 'MNF' opening segment and we agree that the placement was inappropriate,'' ABC said. "We apologize.''

The NFL called the intro "inappropriate and unsuitable for our 'Monday Night Football' audience.''

"While ABC may have gained attention for one of its other shows, the NFL and its fans lost,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The Eagles said they appreciated ABC apologizing for the segment.

"It is normal for teams to cooperate with ABC in the development of an opening for its broadcast,'' the team said. "After seeing the final piece, we wish it hadn't aired.''

ABC has broadcast "Monday Night Football'' with a 5-second delay this season, a precaution after Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction'' at February's Super Bowl halftime show - when Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson's outfit, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of some 90 million. The game was broadcast on CBS, which is protesting a proposed record fine of $550,000 by the FCC.

Is Nicollette trying to turn herself into the new Kim Cattrall?

Yeah we'll be covering up every naked work of art before this next term is done a la Ashcroft's covering of "The Spirit of Justice"'s single exposed breast (with a drapery that cost $8K). Jesus, this country is getting to be too much!

Here we go....

There are - the prudes at the PTC and AFA have complained about DH - to advertisers. Some advertisers have pulled ads. Of course with the enormous popularity of the show, ABC has had no problem finding other advertisers to come onboard in their place.

Another piece of irony (that I haven't heard mentioned by anyone)....the asshole chairman of the FCC, Michael Powell, was interviewed (about Nipplegate and associated issues) at halftime of the Monday Night game btwn Baltimore and KC in early October.

The biggest crime of all is that Eva Longoria was not the Desparate Housewife used for this promo.

i actually hope more "indecency outrages" like this occur so that normal people who could give two shits about it become aware of how a small vocal minority are having an impact on what we can and cannot watch.

Grow some balls ABC.

If you don't see how any of this has anything to do with what just happened on election day, you are even more foolish than your post...

Only when it IS!

The "Values Voters" just won an election -- don't think for a minute that they wouldn't love to bring TV down to ABC Family, Nickelodeon, Disney and the 700 Club. I've already read TOO MANY threads like this just today to just ignore it and flip it off as "much ado about nothing".

Geez, wake up people!

I haven't heard George Bush's attack on ABC or the NFL for this. As a matter of fact, I have yet to hear any politician make a statement concerning this. I haven't heard that the FCC is looking into this either.
Am I the only one that doesn't see how any of this is GW's fault?

Every single one of the "values voters" complained to ABC about this intro.

If John Kerry had won the election, there would have been no complaint.

Silly you.

A big NFL reporter has condemned ABC. Peter King:
I think ABC Sports should be absolutely, positively ashamed of itself for the opening to Monday Night Football, in which Desperate Housewives star Nicolette Sheridan dropped a towel to the floor and jumped naked into the arms of a fully uniformed Terrell Owens. And that's a really nice example Owens -- who talks of being such a God-respecting, religious man -- is setting, letting a naked woman jump into his arms on national TV.

I really have to wonder if this has anything to do with the flap with affiliates and Saving Private Ryan? The affiliates wouldn't play that, yet had no knowledge of this. Maybe ABC was trying to prove a point?

Damn, I really have been asleep. "Values Voters" weren't on my ballot, just Bush, Kerry, and the also-rans.

Pssssst -- hey outraged people. I doubt she was actually naked. Since no "naughty bits" were shown, I fail to see what the brouhaha is all about. It's called "acting". Do these people get upset at soap commercials? All those "naked" people in the shower.

What is so offensive about Nicolette Sheridan's bare back? That's all I saw. Is this the Victorian Age?

'Monday Night Football' Rankles FCC

WASHINGTON - The nation's chief media regulator expressed disappointment Wednesday over the steamy locker room opening to ABC's "Monday Night Football" broadcast.

"I wonder if Walt Disney would be proud," said Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (news - web sites). ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Co.

The opening, which has generated complaints to ABC and the FCC (news - web sites), featured actress Nicollette Sheridan in the locker room, supposedly dressed only in a white towel. She drops the towel and jumps into the arms of Philadelphia Eagles star Terrell Owens. Sheridan was shown only from behind and above the waist after dropping the towel.

Powell questioned the judgment of those who decided to air the scene.

"It would seem to me that while we get a lot of broadcasting companies complaining about indecency enforcement, they seem to be continuing to be willing to keep the issue at the forefront, keep it hot and steamy in order to get financial gains and the free advertising it provides," Powell said during an interview on CNBC.

An FCC spokeswoman said the agency has received a number of complaints about the ABC broadcast, though she declined to say how many.

The complaints will be reviewed and the commission will decide whether or not to open an investigation that could result in a fine against the network. The maximum indecency fine is $32,500 per incident.

ABC quickly apologized for the locker room intro. And the NFL called it "inappropriate and unsuitable for our 'Monday Night Football' audience."

ABC has broadcast "Monday Night Football" with a five-second delay this season, a precaution after singer Janet Jackson (news)'s "wardrobe malfunction" at February's Super Bowl halftime show — when singer Justin Timberlake (news) ripped off part of Jackson's outfit, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of some 90 million people.

CBS is protesting a proposed FCC fine of $550,000 for the halftime show.

As for his tenure at the agency, Powell said he'd be around for "a while yet."

"I still am having fun. There are still things that are really significantly important to me to complete," he said. "Right now, I just have no plans of going anywhere."

I thought it was out of place. It did not below on a show that started at 6pm on the West Coast.

It was a very cheap shot by ABC to plug it "New Hot" show. They knew that a ton of people would call about it and give it even more air time on TV and the Internet.

Keep it for shows starting after 9pm.

I still would like to know if there would have been as much of a brouhaha if she was 'naked' and jumped into someone like Peyton Manning's or Brett Favre's arms.

Wow. Unfortunately, that's a valid question.
