Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs

Don't have the whole list yet. But here's an article with the top ten:

from here

'Like a Rolling Stone' Named No. 1 Song

NEW YORK - Rolling Stone magazine has named the top 500 songs of all time in its new issue, and, well, the No. 1 song isn't exactly a complete unknown.

Bob Dylan (news)'s "Like A Rolling Stone" tops the list, compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson (news), Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others — in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday.

"No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time, for all time," writes David Fricke, a senior editor of Rolling Stone.

Following Dylan is the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," John Lennon (news)'s "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

"It's worth noting that "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Satisfaction" were recorded within a month of each other," Fricke told The Associated Press Wednesday. "It says a lot about how fast pop music was moving at that time."

Rounding out the top ten are "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry (news), the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say."

No one makes the chart more than (surprise, surprise) the Beatles, who have 23 tunes on the list. The Rolling Stones have 14 hits, and Dylan 12.

Though the list is heavy on the `50s, `60s and `70s (voters were told to focus on "the rock 'n' roll era"), the most recent song is 2003's "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, charting at no. 180.

Squeaking in as the 500th all-time best song is Boston's "More Than a Feeling."

i hardly find lists compiled by votes of many respected people to be "worthless". it's not like the idea behind creating these neat lists (with the intention to expose more people to some amazing music) is to say "if you don't listen to this, you suck".

it's the same list that keeps coming out though. It's the same songs that oldies stations play every fucking day. They pick the most popular songs by the most popular bands of all time. It, imo, is pretty worthless. How about a list that's not so predictable or that hasn't been done a thousand times?

I agree it's the same songs that come out all the time...My guess is this that the top 100 will be fairly similar to the VH1 Top 100 that came out a couple of years ago - it was voted on by various music people as well (if I remember right).

But when you expand it out to 500 - I think there will be some songs that aren't typical for these lists (mainly because rarely do you see one over 100 songs). Take the very similarly done Top 500 list that RS came out with last year - while I probably had 150 - 200 of those CDs, there were several that I had either never heard of, or not thought about enough to try out.

While these lists do become very redundant and predictable, I think by making it the top 500 - it allows for the "not-so-obvious" selections to come out. That said, I was much more interested in the 500 albums that I will be with singles.

EDIT TO ADD: I'd love to see a list of "The Top 100 Songs That Have Never Made It Onto Another List"

No, it's to show how "cool" the mags that print these "TOP xXx" lists are..

So if I've got this right Rolling Stone magazine says that Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" is the best song ever, followed by the Rolling Stones "Satifaction"?

Or because it's fun, good publicity, and a good way to get people talking.

Any and all lists made by poll/panel/vote are going to be boring because the picks become flattened by the point values. Hence, songs that everybody "likes rather well" will always rank higher than songs that one or two people think are "really fucking brilliant."

rolling stone doesn't decide these arbitrarily, guys. if you actually read the bit, you'd see that this list, and a lot of the others have been compiled based on what other respected musicians, etc. think. rolling stone organizes it, rolling stone prints it. rolling stone doesn't employ wilco. and it's for that reason that i actually enjoy these lists. because the magazine itself is utter crap. thank goodness they bring in these outside opinions.

Woo-hoo - yet another filler issue from this venerable ol' "lifestyle" magazine.

Baba O'Reilly should have been in the top 10.

I like Nirvana a lot, but SLTS isn't a top ten song of all time. It was important to the end of butt rock and the Grunge movement, but its not a top 10 song of all time.

I don't really like satisfaction much, so I think #2 is too high for that, but it is so recognizable that I'm not surprised.

I like top --- lists. I'm not sure if I like them more for the interesting read or watching people get bent out of shape for no good reason though.

I'd like to see a list of this kind voted on by people who actually have extensive backgrounds in music, whether it be teaching, performing, writing, producing, whatever. People who actually have an extremely educated opinion about what truly makes a great song. And, I want it published in a respected piece of literature. I don't want the same old hacks at Joe/Jane Teenybopper Magazine pulling names of songs out of a hat, or calling up Vince Neil and Puffy Diddy and asking "well, what do YOU guys like?" These songs need to be pulled from history itself, not just from every top 10 list compiled since the beginning of top 10 lists. I want songs nobody's ever heard of! I want obscurity, not just another damn popularity contest!

That's my little rant.

I really despise these "Top xXx" lists [though, I can't stop posting in these threads...], however, this one doesn't bother me that much...

...at least the Top 100.

1,,Like A Rolling Stone."good song but #1,i think not....
2,"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".not even close to the best stones song..
3"Imagine"belongs anywhere they/you want to put it.
4"What's Going On"not my taste,but OK..
5,"Respect"belongs with Imagine.
6,"Good Vibrations"not!!!LOL...
7,"Johnny B. Goode"maybe not top 10 ,but close.
8,"Hey Jude"sound good.
9,- "Smells Like Teen Spirit"(the biggest joke of all)must be the BooHoo(suicide vote)
10,"What'd I Say"no

I guess I'm more main stream but,"Stairway To Heaven"#31(should be top 10)- "Born To Run"#21,drop it below 100,and worst of all, where is Bohemen-Rapsody....
like i said.

Rolling Stone at best is "cat litter"

The only good list Rolling Stone ever put together was the 20th Anniversary - 100 Greatest Albums list, which thankfully excluded celebs from voting.

This one is ****.

I'd bet cash money that if this list were compiled a year ago, you wouldn't see a Ray Charles song anywhere near the top. Since he only recently died, that gives him a spike. It's that type of arbitrary order that renders lists like this useless.

I can't trust any list that has two U2 songs on the Top 100, unless it's a list of the worst things ever.

Earlier this year I was finally able to decide that Like a Rolling Stone is currently my favorite song in the world, so I feel some sympathy for the list. Let's say I don't aggressively disagree with the Top 10. I would have liked to see Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" somewhere on the list, though.
