Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs
Don't have the whole list yet. But here's an article with the top ten:

'Like a Rolling Stone' Named No. 1 Song
NEW YORK - Rolling Stone magazine has named the top 500 songs of all time in its new issue, and, well, the No. 1 song isn't exactly a complete unknown.
Bob Dylan (news)'s "Like A Rolling Stone" tops the list, compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson (news), Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others — in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday.
"No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time, for all time," writes David Fricke, a senior editor of Rolling Stone.
Following Dylan is the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," John Lennon (news)'s "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Aretha Franklin's "Respect."
"It's worth noting that "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Satisfaction" were recorded within a month of each other," Fricke told The Associated Press Wednesday. "It says a lot about how fast pop music was moving at that time."
Rounding out the top ten are "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry (news), the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say."
No one makes the chart more than (surprise, surprise) the Beatles, who have 23 tunes on the list. The Rolling Stones have 14 hits, and Dylan 12.
Though the list is heavy on the `50s, `60s and `70s (voters were told to focus on "the rock 'n' roll era"), the most recent song is 2003's "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, charting at no. 180.
Squeaking in as the 500th all-time best song is Boston's "More Than a Feeling."

i hardly find lists compiled by votes of many respected people to be "worthless". it's not like the idea behind creating these neat lists (with the intention to expose more people to some amazing music) is to say "if you don't listen to this, you suck".

But when you expand it out to 500 - I think there will be some songs that aren't typical for these lists (mainly because rarely do you see one over 100 songs). Take the very similarly done Top 500 list that RS came out with last year - while I probably had 150 - 200 of those CDs, there were several that I had either never heard of, or not thought about enough to try out.
While these lists do become very redundant and predictable, I think by making it the top 500 - it allows for the "not-so-obvious" selections to come out. That said, I was much more interested in the 500 albums that I will be with singles.
EDIT TO ADD: I'd love to see a list of "The Top 100 Songs That Have Never Made It Onto Another List"

Any and all lists made by poll/panel/vote are going to be boring because the picks become flattened by the point values. Hence, songs that everybody "likes rather well" will always rank higher than songs that one or two people think are "really fucking brilliant."

Baba O'Reilly should have been in the top 10.
I like Nirvana a lot, but SLTS isn't a top ten song of all time. It was important to the end of butt rock and the Grunge movement, but its not a top 10 song of all time.
I don't really like satisfaction much, so I think #2 is too high for that, but it is so recognizable that I'm not surprised.
I like top --- lists. I'm not sure if I like them more for the interesting read or watching people get bent out of shape for no good reason though.

I'd like to see a list of this kind voted on by people who actually have extensive backgrounds in music, whether it be teaching, performing, writing, producing, whatever. People who actually have an extremely educated opinion about what truly makes a great song. And, I want it published in a respected piece of literature. I don't want the same old hacks at Joe/Jane Teenybopper Magazine pulling names of songs out of a hat, or calling up Vince Neil and Puffy Diddy and asking "well, what do YOU guys like?" These songs need to be pulled from history itself, not just from every top 10 list compiled since the beginning of top 10 lists. I want songs nobody's ever heard of! I want obscurity, not just another damn popularity contest!

I really despise these "Top xXx" lists [though, I can't stop posting in these threads...], however, this one doesn't bother me that much...

Earlier this year I was finally able to decide that Like a Rolling Stone is currently my favorite song in the world, so I feel some sympathy for the list. Let's say I don't aggressively disagree with the Top 10. I would have liked to see Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" somewhere on the list, though.
