Celebrity Voices in Video Games...

Tonight I noticed that David Cross voices one of your marine buddies in Halo 2... this combined with his other recent appearance as a character in GTA San Andreas makes me wonder how he managed to land both those gigs. I noticed several other voices in Halo 2 as well... Michelle Rodigez, that redhead girl from That 70s Show among others. The GTA series has been getting well-known celebs to voice their games for awhile now... Michael Madsen and whatnot. Michael Ironsides tends to end up voicing video games alot. What started this trend? Mark Hammil in Wing Commander? I recall Tim Curry voicing games several years ago as well as Dennis Hopper... both games I'm thinking of were pretty bad.

What do you guys think of this trend? And go ahead and list celebrity appearances in games - obscure or well-known. This thread can go either way. Or for that matter - what is your favorite celebrity voice appearance in a game.

Hey man Work is Work. There was time when actors felt that Voicework was "Beneath them". Now Voiceactors are having to compete with big time stars to get these gigs. I think its great to have movie stars especially if the game is based on a movie. It helps to have the same actor voice the character they played in he movie.

My personal favorite for awesome voice work is the Legend of Kain/Soul Reaver series.

I like this trend. It sure beats the lame voice acting that was all over the place years ago.

I have to agree with you there. They took it extremely seriously. In some games it feels like the actors are smirking or giggling between takes and it ruins it for me. In the Kain series they are all awesome. Did you watch the behind the scenes thing on the last one of the actors doing the voices. It was wild. I liken it to the first time I saw the actors who voice the Simpsons in real life. Very strange.

Yes, I did watch the behind the scenes. I work in a Voicework related field so it was fascinating.

I would guess that increased use (or overuse) of celebrity voices in animated movies, along with how games have become more like movies (with budgets to match) has something to do with it.
