Half Life 2 for sale@ Best Buy

I just went to Best Buy, and they had HL 2 there. I was confused, but the guys there said, yes they were selling it 5 days early.

One thing though. B/C the official release date is Nov16th, you won't be able to go online till then. But you can play the single player game.

From here: http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33790848

I'm not sure if I'm reading it right, but I think the guy's saying he can't play the single player game because it's not unlocked on Steam even though he has the original discs...

EDIT: Yep, according to this GameSpot article even if you are lucky enough to get the game early, you can't play it until it's authenticated online through Steam:

"For security/antipiracy, each copy must be authenticated via Steam during installation," Valve's Doug Lombardi told GameSpot. "After this one-time (per install) authentication is complete, an Internet connection is not required for single-player and LAN games."

Valve stated previously if the game is leaked early, they will allow people to play it before its slated release date, lets see if they stick with that.

So if, for some reason, I can't connect to the Internet with the computer I am installing HL2 on, I won't be able to complete the install?

That's the way I read it, if so that sucks. Wonder if the "hacker" type people will find a fix for this before the 16th...

Yep. Even to play the single player campaign, you must connect to the Steam server to register...for now at least.

Let's hope so. I am getting it for a friend and his internet is down for awhile. Sucks if he would have to wait to play.

From what i've read the cd's just contain the exact same GCF's that were preloaded with steam. Along with the same missing files that steam must provide when it's registered. This could be rumor but you may have to download a couple of small files from steam after registering to even play single player at all

I can understand them not wanting people to get their hands on this game early, but to force someone to need an internet connection to register the game to be able to play it is a little much.

so if valve goes under and in couple of years i want to play hl2 again and have to install it again i will not be able to play it, because they will not have a site to download the files to unlock the game

I don't see the big problem. A one time activation online period. I'm sure down the line when both companies have made piles of money on this, they'll release a dvd of it where you don't need to activate it

Can't wait for H λ L F - L I F E ² uesday!
