I miss back when... a hoe was a hoe

My newest ear worm.

Tim McGraw
"Back When"

Don't you remember
The fizz in a pepper
Peanuts in a bottle
At ten, two and four
A fried bologna sandwich
With mayo and tomato
Sittin' round the table
Don't happen much anymore

We got too complicated
It's all way over-rated
I like the old and out-dated
Way of life

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

I love my records
Black, shiny vinyl
Clicks and pops
And white noise
Man they sounded fine
I had my favorite stations
The ones that played them all
Country, soul and rock-and-roll
What happened to those times?

I'm readin' Street Slang For Dummies
Cause they put pop in my country
I want more for my money
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

Give me a flat top for strumming
I want the whole world to be humming
Just keep it coming
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

Are you for or against it? Cause I'd love to get in on some flaming Tim McGraw action if so.

Sounds like a song my grandpa would write. I mean I can understand some of the lines but honestly people have been saying, "I'm down with that" for at least 30 years. And using the word screw to mean sex? I'm pretty sure they said that in the 40s.

I was trying to be mindful of the forum rule against threadcrapping.

I'll be polite and say songs like this have to be carefully done or they come across as cranky old farts.

Or himself. Or every single one of his friends.

Has anyone ever said "I'm down with that" in reference to the flu?

I think he means, "I've come down with a case of the flu." or something similar.

This is the problem with doing a song like this. If he talked about things like chickenheads and dirty sanchezes and other terms that haven't blanketed pop culture, none of his fans would understand the reference.

Instead, he has to use pop culture terms from at least 20 years ago. I mean, is anyone really that upset that crack is now the name of a drug, screwing refers to sex, being "down" with something means you want to do it? Of course not. Because these are innocous sayings and have become ingrained in the collective unconscience. The only phrase he has any legitimacy with is hoe and ho. Even that is really losing effect as more and more people become acclimated to it.

But I guess he is just trying to show how true he can be to country music, just like Johnny Cash. Oh wait, except Johnny Cash didn't marry a pop country star and make a terrible song with a rapper.

In all fairness, back in the 60s and 70s, the country-western singers were doing so many drugs that they put the hippies to shame.

The 80's rocked; that particular time period may never have a rival, as far as diversity/acceptance of different musical styles.

And go back to vinyl???? (chuckling) I think not, son...I think not.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of country music, and I prefer the 80s when more people enjoyed it in private. Now they are just so open about it! If you said you liked country back in the 80s, you were a geek.

Screw this crap...this is more like it:

Brutality by Black Box Recorder

Whatever happened to the fear of god?
Whatever happened to church on sunday?
Whatever happened to the velvet glove?
And the iron fist
Whatever happened to the social season?
Whatever happened to the debutants?
Whatever happened to the South of France?

Good old fashioned brutality
Everything in it's place
Good old fashioned barbarity
Leave the room in disgrace

Whatever happened to drinking and driving
And doing the decent thing?
Hiding out on the continent
Getting over a nervous breakdown
Close the ranks and remove all traces
Say anything to stay out of jail
What it really boils down to:
It always wins, it never fails

Good old fashioned brutality
Everything in it's place
Good old fashioned barbarity
Leave the room in disgrace

Ah-ah-ah,ah-ah...

Driving back from a late night party
Took a corner much too fast
Head-on collision with the 21st century
Whatever happened to brutality?
