What system is most geared towards kids?
My friend is looking at getting a console for her 6 year old son. We discussed the merits of both the PS2 and the Gamecube. I think we both agreed that Xbox was geared towards mature gamers and decided against it.
Now, I know that Gamecube is definitely more kid friendly, as this has always been Nintendo's forte.
However, she really liked the fact that PS2 was gonna double as a DVD player.
Which do you guys recommend and why?
(sorry if thread is dupe, I tried searching and came up dry)

If he's a mario fan, go with the GC. If mom needs a DVD player, too, the PS2 is a great system. The action platformers for the PS2 (Jak, Ratchet and Sly series) are all fantastic and are fine for younger kids. You won't go wrong either way.

if money is an issue you could go for a previous generation system... but i would go with gba, particularly for its portability.. the friend will thank you on car trips

If she's considering spending the $150 for a PS2, she could get a GameCube and Gameboy Player for the same price. The combination would let her choose from hundreds of kid friendly titles.
Stand-alone DVD players will probably be very cheap again leading up to Christmas (~$25). I wouldn't pay the extra for a PS2 just for the DVD capability. The PS2's DVD features are on par with the cheap players and you have to pay extra for a PS2 DVD remote.

Gamecube or Gameboy Advance - Durability is important and PS2 is probably much more fragile. Still not as bad as XBox. I have all of them and if I had a kid I would go Nintendo. Better price, better games (for yougsters), better multiplayer for friends that come over.

There are more than enough games on both systems to keep the kid entertained. My suggestion, pick up a Mario Kart bundle for the cube for $100.
