This Week's CDs (11/9-14)

DFA Compilation #2 3xCD
Calla, Scavengers CD
Todd Rundgren, Something/Anything 2xLP
OOIOO, Feather Float CD
Manishevitz, Rollover CD
Rocket From the Tombs, Rocket Redux CD
XTC, English Settlement 2xLP
Tangerine Dream, Phaedra LP
King Crimson, Starless and Bible Black LP

QoTD: Pimp an album, preferably released this year, that people have probably heard about, but wouldn't really consider picking up. Mine is Things Are Strange by Panthers. It hit me out nowhere cos I'm rarely interested in riffin' and big arena production, but wow. I love it. They touch on the usual suspects (MC5, Stooges, duh), so check it out.

Wolf Eyes- Burned Mind
DFA- Compilation #2
Zeena Parkins & Ikue Mori- Phantom Orchid
Fennesz- Endless Summer
Einsturzende Neubauten- Perpetum Mobile
John Coltrane- Stellar Regions

AotD- Hmm... I think Ghost's Hypnotic Underworld was overlooked by a lot of people who'd possibly like it. It covers a lot of ground: improvised traditional Japanese music; pure rock; cool tension-building jams, psychedelic, etc. One of my fav. albums of the year, and one of the live highlights of the year.

I keep meaning to buy that.

On a side note, I found out that Cotton Casino (of Acid Mothers Temple) lives in my town! (??)

Some oldies for me. I'm working on filling up my iPod

Sugar - Copper Blue
BT - Blue Skies(with Tori Amos) single
Ella Fitzgerald - Best of the songbooks

QoTD: Jonatha Brooke - Back in the Circus

A musician that a lot of people don't know because she isn't out on a major lable. She has had some songs in things people might have heard. I know she had a song in an episode of Dawson's Creek. She also had a song in the Disney movie Return to Neverland.

Just got these for the Ipod

Interpol - Antics
Muse - Absolution
Garden State Soundtrack
Cure - Staring at the Sea
Cure - Disintegration
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Fiona Apple - Tidal

QoTD - I'd recommend Weightlifiting by the Trashcan Sinatras. Little known band from Scotland. This is their first album in like 8 years and they sound great. It's a bit ahrd to describe their sound except that they sound like a Scottish version of Travis.

New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
Fugazi - 13 Songs
The Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy
The Smashing Pumpkins - Machina

QoTD: A Grand Don't Come For Free by The Streets. Incredible UK rap/electronic artist. Some of the songs are funny "It Was Supposed To Be So Easy" "Fit But You Know It", some happy "Could Well Be In" "Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way" and ultimately tragic "Dry Your Eyes." It's a trip through the life of one young man in presumably London.

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
Jeff Buckley - Grace (Legacy Edition)
Wilco - The Wilco Book
The Slip - Aliveacoustic
Sufjan Stevens - Greetings from Michigan...the Great Lake State

AOTD: Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets. This album just flat out rocks. Catchy, energetic, uncompromising...a near perfect record.
