I really don't think you'll find anything decent in that price range unless somone has a real dramatic clearance sale.

For the money, the Onkyo 770, a 6.1 system, seems to be a great value. CC had it for $499 a few weeks ago. Not sure what the price is now.

OK. If you look hard enough you can get a Sherwood 6108 (or similar model) for around $100. I bought one a couple of years ago for $69 from Ecost.com. It is a decent 65 watt receiver. You can get a 75 watt sub from mysony.com for $75 (with free shipping). That leaves a decent amount for low end speakers to complete the package.

Previous post: Yea, that's a good system. I've used a Onkyo receiver for a few years now and I've never had a problem with it.

I am also looking for a HTIB for around this range. I am planninng to ask for it for Christmas so I really can't go over $300 dollars. I like the Onkyo system above, but I think I may need to buy a new DVD player with that one since I bought mine in 1999. So i was hoping for a system with the player built in.
Also I live in a apartment so I don't need tons of power.
Any suggestions?
