Filmmaker gunned down
Dutch film-maker Theo Van Gogh has been shot dead in Amsterdam. Van Gogh, 47 - who was related to legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh - had received death threats since his controversial film Submission, which depicted violence against women in Islamic societies, was broadcast on Dutch television. After the attack, police arrested a man in a nearby park but, before they restrained him, there was a vicious exchange of gunfire that left a policeman and the suspect with bullet wounds. Both are now in hospital. Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende says, "It is unacceptable if expressing your opinion would be the cause of this brutal murder." Van Gogh had also been making a film about Pim Fortuyn, the populist right- wing, anti-immigration politician assassinated in May 2002.

It happened a day and a half ago, so of course there is already a lengthy thread on the incident.
