Another vote here for "The Searchers". Not only is it a great western, it is one of the best films I've ever seen.

Also pick up "The Tin Star", with Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins.

And for something a little different, "Flaming Star", starring Elvis Presley as a half-breed. But don't let that fool you, it's actually a decent movie, and is a western, not a musical.

a tv set that seems to be well worth recommending
Have Gun Will Travel
39 (half hour, self contained) eps on five discs.

i'd never seen the show but sample three eps last night and was pretty impressed.
looks to have been a solid blind buy (for a change).

Hombre is out on a very nice looking, inexpensive disc from Fox and is a good movie also.

The Last Outlaw coming out in Feb is a good one. Has some good footage of the Bad Lands, IIRC.

My favorite western, and one of my favorite movies period, is LONESOME DOVE. It never seems to get mentioned in discussions of westerns, probably because it was a tv miniseries. But, I think it's great!
