60 Minutes 10/31 might have backstage SNL/Ashlee Simpson footage

from today's Chicago Sun Times:

"60 Minutes" (6 p.m., WBBM-Channel 2)

Lesley Stahl's piece on "Saturday Night Live" has a little added bonus. Turns out she and her crew were backstage when Ashlee Simpson fled the stage last week and saw Lorne Michaels' reaction to it. They also were at dress rehearsal when Simpson ran offstage because her voice failed her. Maybe "SNL" shouldn't book performers so unseasoned they can't get through a song, sick or not. Remember how a partied-out Mick Jagger sang with a shredded voice on Oct. 7, 1978? Those were the days.

Oh Jesus fucking Christ, 60 Minutes now? Some teenybopper lip syncs her song, how is this news?

60 Minutes is more of a "magazine" show.

Saw a promo for this on CBS Saturday Morning. Looks like 60 Minutes was there doing a story of the making of a SNL show, and just happened to be there on the right night.

So I have to watch 60 minutes? No thanks. If there is backstage video, it'll show up online.

No.. I don't honestly care, but it's interesting.

It already is online and it's not worth tuning into 60 Minutes for. Trust me.

What could be more appropriate than a 60 Minutes segment on "faking it?"

So now we are going with "voice problem," instead of "the band played the wrong song." Riiight.

Exit stage left, your 15 minutes are up.

Just finished watching it - it was actually a lot better than I thought. It was about 10 minutes, and it gave a full in-depth review of what happens behind the scenes at a typical week of SNL. They also interviewed cast members, and followed around Lorne.

It seemed to be a coincidence that 60 Minutes was there during the week of this particular show! And Lorne also said that he had no idea Ashlee was planning to lip-synch.

It was interesting seeing the infamous clip from a different camera angle.

You mean we'll get to see the Ashlee jig from another angle?

The footage they showed in the promo's was a bit misleading. They used footage of Simpson rushing of stage after she completed the rehearsal performance, but left the impression that it was from the live walk off during the show.

Just caught this... it does show that her voice was messed up and she was worried about how it would hold up on the live performance.

They showed her leaving the stage after the first performance complaining about her throat.

It was a good segment but unfortunately made her look like she was telling the truth.

It was a pretty cool behind the scenes at SNL. It also followed the Arnold Schwarzenegger segment

Doesn't she always have voice probs tho? I remember her show on MTV I watched about 10 minutes one time for some reason and she was complaining about voice problems and seeing a doctor.

Her songs aren't exactly Opera fer chrissakes. Not sure how seeing bad pop music can injure your voice.

I think she smokes a pack a day.

Just watched that segment. The piece was pretty interesting overall, but leads to one obvious question: If the show is so meticulously run and so many sketches are cut prior to airtime, then why does the final product suck 95% of the time?

Well, notice when Lorne spoke about how much stuff you just can't get away with anymore. PC has killed SNL.

whatever. I'm sure if he wanted to push the envelope he could. He just chooses not to.

I thought the segment was cool. I enjoyed the Arnold one before it mroe though.

I was surprised at how much say the guest host has. So, in the grand scheme of things, the final SNL is a product of 2 people's sense of humor (Lorne and the guest host).
