Creature from the black lagoon Legacy comparisons?
Greetings!
I have been searching for this info-but haven't found anything yet.
Of course, you get the two sequels-But are there any comparisons of CFTBL to the old release?
Is it a new transfer? any new or missing extras from the first release? Better image/sound quality? etc.
All help is most appreciated.
Thanx.

The transfer on the new disc appears to be the same as the original (which is not bad at all). I did some spot comparisons, and don't see any discernable difference in either picture or sound quality.
As far as extras, they are the same, except that the original disc included a brief production notes section, and "biographies" on 5 of the cast/crew members, and these are missing from the new set (I guess people don't find these features interesting any more). The remaining extras (theatrical trailer, production photographs, "Back to the Black Lagoon" documentary, and audio commentary by Tom Weaver) are all identical to the original release. In fact, aside from a few minor changes, disc 1 of the new set could be considered virtually identical to the original disc.
And, of course, there are the sequels, each of which includes a trailer and commentary.

Revenge Of the Creature has several black vertical lines running through the picture during alot of the underwater scenes.
Also seems to be grainer than the other two movies. Overall, still a nice set and one i've been looking forward to for a long time.

I didn't have the time to do a visual comparison for my website last night, and I probably won't tonight either (but maybe after I see Team America).
Keep an eye on the site though:

A long time ago I remember watching the Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3-D. Although I have not read it anywhere, did they bother to release this movie in it's original form???
Thanks,
The General

Hopefully at some point films like these will be released using one of the 3D formats like the shutter glass system.

For anybody who IS having problems finding this set, look around. Everywhere in my area except Wal Mart, didn't have it. And looking on some of the websites for stores like FYE, it says it's on back order...

I'm working on the comparison right now. It should be up in an hour or so (I'll post). Meantime... the new transfer of Creature From the Black Lagoon is noticeably better than the old edition.
Edited to add: Wow, The Invisible Man is a huge improvement too...
Edited to add: Still working on the actual web pages, but for now, here's my initial report card:
Creature From the Black Lagoon Improvement grade ++
The Invisible Man Improvement grade ++++
The Mummy Improvement grade 0 (no change)
The Mummy's Hand Improvement grade +
The Mummy's Tomb Improvement grade +
The Mummy's Curse Improvement grade - (older one is better)
The Mummy's Ghost Improvement grade ++

Okay, I've finished. Have a look at all the comparisons - side-by-side screen captures and analysis here:

I'm lucky enough to be seeing this on Saturday, on the big screen, in glorious 3-D!
Out local art-house theater is having their annual fund-raiser gala, and Creature is the film for this year. I can't wait!
and this is in Montgomery, Alabama.. go figure..

I could be very wrong, but I think the Creature was a blue/red 3D film...I don't think polarized 3D was available when it came out.

Creature has been shown on TV using the blue/red 3D (anaglyphic), but it was filmed for the two camera polarized style. Anaglyphic works and is cheap, Spy Kids 3D used it, but it doesn't hold up when compared to a properly projected film using the polarized style.

Darkside is correct, both CREATURE and REVENGE as well as 49 other 3-D movies made in 1952-55 were all released in polarized format in which the audience wears clear gray polariod glasses. So have the vast majority of 3-D features released since then.
If you've only seen the abysmal red/blue anaglyph conversions of these or other movies, you haven't seen the real thing at all. The difference is gigantic.
Dual Projector polarized format screenings of the first and second Gill-Man movies were among the highlights of last years WORLD 3-D FILM EXPO in Los Angeles. The prints may have been fifty years old, but the effect in the first film especially was startling.
I had previously seen the first film in both 16mm and 35mm anaglyph conversions, as well as a shutter version, but seeing it on the big screen in startling crisp black and white 3-D wearing polarized glasses made it seem like the first time.
The screenings were especially fun since Julie Adams, Lori Nelson and other stars were in attendance, watching the film with us and then particpating in a Q&A session.
The Legacy DVDs are great, priced right and including new commenatries on the sequels. The flat versions aren't ideal but they are likely the best choice for most viewers at home. Red/Blue anaglyph conversions are simply unwatchable, and while field sequential (shutter glasses) versions are much better, they have problems and issues of their own.

Great commentary on Revenge. Bob Burns comments a lot on the wonderful job of the 3-D effect and even says that us fans want them on DVD (listening Uni?). I especially love the alternative titles for Revenge, like Gill Man Vs. Science!!!!!
The creature sequels were not cheap knockoffs and the inclusion of the two new commentaries are prove of that. This set easily is the better of the new three that were released Tuesday.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would post this here:
I got my shipment of DVDs from Amazon today, and Creature from the Black Lagoon was making a clanking sound. "Oh crap," I thought, "there's a floater." I opened the DVD, expecting to find a scratched to hell disc. Instead, there were two copies of the second disc. It wasn't missing the first disc, this two disc set had three DVDs in it. Has this ever happend to anyone else?

Finished both of the new Creature commentaries and they were both excellent. Really makes me wish Universal had decided to do commentaries for all the sequels. Even though the other two sets had 5 films each, Creature was the one I enjoyed the most.
